Perhaps a remarkable move for the bystander: Elon Musk encouraging the radical right-wing AfD. For Timothy Snyder, a professor of history specializing in the Holocaust and Eastern Europe, this is anything but surprising. VPRO Tegenlicht delves into the thinking of oligarchs with Snyder, who are increasingly finding each other on the world stage.

Since his inauguration, Trump has been frantically distributing decrees. In this way, he is investigating the limits of his power. Or should we say: the limits of Elon Musk's power? The unelected multi-billionaire who, with his Department Of Government Efficiency (DOGE), must ensure that government spending is significantly reduced (taxes for the super-rich are of course not being tinkered with).

In addition to Musk peeing in the Oval Office, he also urinates over political Europe, where he immediately flirts exuberantly with radical right-wing parties. The historian also questions the fact that the latter are the ones who wave the nationalist flag the loudest. Are politicians like Trump really as nationalistic as they pretend to be? Or does ‘Make America Great Again’ mainly mean ‘let’s create a global oligarchy’?

The same applies to AfD frontwoman Alice Weidel, who lives just across the border in Switzerland and has been in a relationship with Sri Lankan Sarah for fifteen years. Weidel’s private life is not entirely in line with the AfD ideology, you could say. Political arbitrariness, opportunism and hypocrisy drip from it.

Timothy Snyder, a professor of history, observes political dynamics and the tactics behind them. Based on these observations, he wrote the book ‘On Tyranny’, in which he presents the reader with twenty lessons from the twentieth century on tyranny.

To understand why rulers like Putin and Trump would work together, according to Snyder, we need to look at what they have in common: for both, the rule of law is a useless obstacle, an inconvenient barrier to exercising their power without limits. The more the rule of law breaks down, the more the world becomes a free playground for rich people like them.

According to Snyder, Russia's propaganda rests entirely on the story that democracy is not an option and does not work in other countries either. The freedom we experience is just an illusion, according to that propaganda. To keep such a successful propaganda machine running, it helps when the misleading message becomes somewhat of a reality, so you undermine existing democracies all the better. The more misleading information, the greater the chance that you create a kind of self-fulfilling prophecy situation. One of the reasons that Russia spreads so much misinformation. Snyder emphasizes: without facts, there is no basis for questioning power.

In “Are the Ultra-Rich the New F*ssists?” Snyder argues that in order to protect the truth, we must also face the facts that confront us, because as long as we ignore signs of hate, we cannot combat them.

Voor de omstander wellicht een opmerkelijke zet: Elon Musk die de radicaal-rechtse AfD aanmoedigt. Voor Timothy Snyder, als hoogleraar geschiedenis gespecialiseerd in de Holocaust en Oost-Europa, allesbehalve verrassend. VPRO Tegenlicht duikt met Snyder in de gedachtegang van oligarchen, die elkaar steeds vaker weten te vinden op het wereldtoneel.

Sinds zijn inauguratie strooit Trump als een razende decreten in de rondte. Hij onderzoekt zo de grenzen van zijn macht. Of moeten we zeggen: de grenzen van Elon Musks macht? De niet-gekozen multi-miljardair die er met zijn Department Of Government Efficiency (DOGE) voor moet zorgen dat overheidsuitgaven flink teruggebracht worden (aan belastingen voor superrijken wordt uiteraard niet gesleuteld).

Naast dat Musk zijn plasje doet in het Oval Office, watert hij ook over politiek Europa, waar-ie meteen maar uitgelaten flirt met radicaal-rechtse partijen. Dat die laatste degenen zijn die de nationalistische vlag het hardst laten wapperen, trekt de historicus trouwens in twijfel. Zijn politici als Trump wel zo nationalistisch als ze zich voordoen? Of betekent ‘Make America Great Again’ vooral ‘laten we een globale oligarchie maken’?

Datzelfde geldt voor AfD-frontvrouw Alice Weidel, die net over de grens in Zwitserland woont en vijftien jaar een relatie heeft met de Sri Lankaanse Sarah. Weidels privéleven is niet helemaal in lijn met de AfD-ideologie zou je kunnen zeggen. Politieke willekeur, opportunisme en hypocrisie druipen ervanaf.

Timothy Snyder observeert als hoogleraar geschiedenis politieke dynamieken en de tactieken erachter. Aan de hand van die observaties schreef hij het boek ‘Over tirannie’, waarin hij de lezer over tirannie twintig lessen uit de twintigste eeuw voorschotelt.

Om te snappen waarom machthebbers zoals Poetin en Trump zouden samenwerken, moeten we volgens Snyder kijken naar wat ze gemeen hebben: voor beiden is de rechtsstaat een nutteloos obstakel, een onhandige barrière om ongelimiteerd hun macht uit te oefenen. Hoe meer de rechtsstaat afbreekt, hoe meer de wereld een vrije speeltuin wordt voor rijkelui als zij.

Zo rust de propaganda van Rusland volgens Snyder compleet op het verhaal dat democratie geen optie is en ook niet werkt in andere landen. De vrijheid die wij ervaren is maar een illusie, aldus die propaganda. Om zo’n succesvolle propagandamachine te laten draaien helpt het wanneer de misleidende boodschap toch enigszins realiteit wordt, zo ondermijn je des te beter bestaande democratieën. Hoe meer misleidende informatie, hoe groter de kans dat je een soort self fulfilling prophecy-situatie creëert. Een van de redenen dat Rusland zoveel misinformatie verspreidt. Snyder benadrukt: zonder feiten is er geen basis meer om de macht te bevragen.

In ‘Zijn de ultrarijken de nieuwe f*scisten?’ pleit Snyder dat we voor het beschermen van de waarheid ook de feiten onder ogen moeten zien die confronterend zijn, want zolang we tekenen van haat negeren, kunnen we ze niet bestrijden.
