Joseph under test and trial from the pit and prison through Potiphar’s house…

Acts 7:9-10a… “Abraham begat Isaac, and circumcised him the eighth day; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat the twelve patriarchs. And the patriarchs, moved with envy, sold Joseph into Egypt: but God was with him, And delivered him out of all his afflictions…”

Psalms 105:16-22… “Moreover he called for a famine upon the land: he broke the whole staff of bread. He sent a man before them, even Joseph, who was sold for a servant: Whose feet they hurt with fetters: he was laid in iron: Until the time that his word came: the word of the LORD tried him. The king sent and loosed him; even the ruler of the people, and let him go free. He made him lord of his house, and ruler of all his substance: To bind his princes at his pleasure; and teach his senators wisdom.

“…Until the time” (just mentioned in Psalm 105) concurs with the Apostle Peter’s words “…if need be…” seen in 1st Peter 1:6-9… “Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations: That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ: Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory: Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.

“…Until the time…” (in type, the words of Genesis 41:14… “Then Pharaoh sent and called Joseph, and they brought him hastily out of the dungeon: and he shaved himself, and changed his raiment, and came in unto Pharaoh.”) also speaks to where Joseph is today… in Hades, the intermediate place of the dead; awaiting the call to the First Resurrection, when its gates will not prevail against the greater than Egypt’s Pharaoh’s calling and when he is hastly brought out of the dungeon… when “…the Lord Himself will descend from Heaven with a shout… and the dead in Christ shall rise first…”

These types, in the first place, speak to the Son of God coming from Heaven to Earth incarnate as a man, walking 30 years faithfully, being then filled with the Holy Spirit in the announcing of the Kingdom come, showing things to come that the Father revealed to Him (Genesis 40:8… things that will, as in the type, surely come to pass), being rejected and betrayed, tortured and Crucified, being carried down into the Pit of Hades. (Isaiah 52:14) There in Hades, He is seen to be in great distress as shown in type in Jonah 2, and seen to be in prayerful anticipation of His Resurrection (without Whose Resurrection, no one would have ever been resurrected - ‘saved’ or unsaved… 1st Corinthians 15:20-24… “But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept. For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive (be brought up out of Hades and receive the fulness of First Resurrection life). But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ's at his coming/Parousia (presence into this realm’s unseen heaven for judgements). Then cometh the end (Daniels 70th week/7-year Tribulation), when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power.” See also John 11:25… “Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live.”).

And in the second place, these types are set forth for Christians who are ‘in Christ.’ These correlating analogies/events separated by centuries can be seen as types for our edification as we are, each one of us, appointed to pass through the wilderness tests and trials of this World unto every man’s appointed death… and then immediate incarceration in Hades (incarceration, in that it has keys and gates which hold all the dead in its various locales - see Luke 16). As is Joseph today, upon our death, we will also go there to await one of those two resurrections… the blessed First Resurrection or the second; at the Great White Throne… which is over a thousand years later, at which all the remainder will stand before Him in judgement for things they did or did not....
