15
Dian Fossey, a pioneering primatologist, dedicated her life to studying and protecting mountain gorillas in Rwanda. Establishing the Karisoke Research Center in 1967, she conducted groundbreaking research on gorilla behavior and social structures. Fossey’s deep connection to the animals drove her relentless fight against poaching, raising global awareness of their plight. Her efforts significantly reduced poaching in the region and inspired conservation initiatives worldwide. Though tragically killed in 1985, her legacy lives on through continued gorilla protection programs and her book Gorillas in the Mist. Fossey’s work remains a cornerstone of wildlife conservation, safeguarding mountain gorillas for future generations.
