Did you know that South Africa grows one of the world’s most sought-after oranges, and it’s not just for eating—it fuels a billion-dollar juice industry? But there’s a hidden secret behind its cultivation that most people don’t know!
Deep in the heart of Limpopo, South Africa, beyond its famous avocado farms, lies a massive orange empire. Covering over 160 hectares, this citrus paradise exports its juicy treasures to Europe, Russia, the Middle East, and even Canada. But what makes these oranges so special? Let’s dive into the fascinating process behind their success!
Farmers here focus on two main varieties: Valencia oranges and lemons. The Valencia orange is king—seedless, vibrant, and bursting with natural sweetness. While most people enjoy it as fresh fruit, its real dominance lies in the juice industry.
But growing these premium oranges isn’t as easy as it looks. The trees demand a specific climate, thriving best in daytime temperatures between 15°C and 23°C. They also require at least six hours of uninterrupted sunlight daily. And that’s exactly why South Africa’s geography makes it a citrus-growing powerhouse!
It all starts with superior seeds—only the best, certified ones make the cut. Farmers carefully germinate these seeds in controlled conditions. Once they sprout and reach 20 cm in height, strict selection begins. Weak or defective seedlings are immediately discarded. The survivors are then transplanted into poly bags and nurtured until they reach 50 cm with a strong 8 mm stem.
