Generation Gap, Technology Gap

My kids live in the future.

Back in my youth, the idea you’d walk into a room and say, “lights,” and the lights would turn on was science fiction.

And yet, here we are.

Amazon’s Alexa, Apple Home Pod, Google Nest…

You can control the heat, play music, add to shopping lists, many things with a simple voice command.

It’s pretty nifty.

One of the first big technology leaps was from the big, boxy televisions with enormous dials, to the remote.

You mean I can change the channel from the comfort of my chair?

That’s insane!!

I know we older people say kids today are soft, but it’s true: life is much easier for young folk.

Technology makes things much, much easier for them.

And, like all things, it keeps getting cheaper and cheaper.

The first flatscreen TV my wife and I bought was a floor model, and somewhere around $1,200.

It might have been 44”.

We recently bought one almost double that size for less than half the price.

Anyway, all this leads to my son not understanding a Garfield comic strip.

Which is fine; ignorance isn’t bad, it’s simply a lack of knowledge.

So, I explained the strip to him.

And now, I’m trying to teach him the difference between Garfield, and “funny.”
