Since 1998, when the legislature had authorized the establishment of public charter schools, only five have been established, and none in the most progressive County of Arlington, the first to desegregate public schools in the Old Dominion State, albeit not without staunch resistance in a community that had not even erected a sufficient number of segregated schoolhouses, like the one in North Carolina, just across the state line from Danville, where the grandson of a franchise martyr, with two family churches on the National Historic Registry’s grandmother had taught. Dixiecrats and the Uptown Klan, who had been instrumental in placing Robert E. Lee’s name on a local high school in 1925, one year after his grandfather was shot, and his father and his family were forced to abandon their home to flee north in the night, had even refused to pay for the public education of colored children seeking schooling in D.C., which has even permitted public charter schools. And, as they used to say of the former prima donna high school and college thespian, “Son of Ercel has rehearsal.”
