Washington, D.C., February 13, 2025 — During a House Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade subcommittee hearing, Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) suggested that women might be discouraged from pursuing careers in manufacturing because the word ‘man’ is in the name.

Schakowsky made the bizarre claim while discussing ways to increase female participation in the industry, citing a low percentage of women currently signing up for manufacturing programs.

“I’m just wondering if just the name manufacturing sounds like a guy,” Schakowsky said, prompting widespread ridicule across social media.

Backlash Over Schakowsky’s Comments
The comments sparked an immediate wave of criticism, with many pointing out that plenty of other professions contain ‘man’ in the name yet have no shortage of female workers.

“Oh yeah? Then how come so many women go into menopause?” one user wrote mockingly.

Another added, “How about manual? Do women avoid manuals too? Manager? Mango? Where does this logic stop?”

The Bigger Picture: Ignoring Real Workforce Barriers
Critics argue that Schakowsky’s focus on semantics distracts from the real issues preventing more women from joining manufacturing, including:

Declining STEM education in schools
Outsourcing of American jobs to foreign countries
Regulations that make it harder for businesses to hire and train workers
Instead of reforming trade policies and increasing vocational training opportunities, Schakowsky’s tone-deaf remarks suggest that the biggest obstacle for women in manufacturing is merely the name of the industry.

“This is the kind of unserious leadership that’s killing American jobs,” one critic noted.

With American industry struggling to compete against foreign markets, many are wondering: Is this really the conversation Congress should be having?
