Mar. 23, 1965 | Interviews with Selma Marchers
Mar. 23, 1965 - A spring rain drenched the Alabama voting-rights march today, but there was no sign that it dampened the spirits of the 300 marchers.
On its third day, the 50-mile protest march, approved by a Federal court and protected by the U.S. Army, pushed 11 miles further eastward on U.S. Highway 80 toward Montgomery, now about 20 miles away. The organizers of the march hope 20,000 persons will attend a mass meeting in front of the Capitol Thursday.
While his followers walked and sang their way toward Montgomery, Dr. Martin Luther King flew to Cleveland to keep a speaking engagement. He is expected to return to the march tomorrow to be with the procession when it reaches the outskirts of Montgomery tomorrow night.
