Mar. 20, 1965 - President Johnson, accusing Alabama Governor George Wallace of shirking a “solemn responsibility” to protect civil rights marchers in Alabama, announced today he has deployed more than 3,000 men — including some Federal troops — to do the job.
The Alabama racial situation dominated a Johnson news conference televsied and broadcast nationally from the windswept front lawn of the President’s ranch home near Johnson City, Tex.
