A Mar-a-Lago member posted images of a golden-hoofed goat idol on display at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home.

The idol also has golden horns and is covered in what appears to be $100 Trump novelty bill that say, “In Trump we trust,” replaying God in the phrase “In God we trust” with Trump.

The idol sits on a black base with an American flag on side and has the message, “I love you” along with Trump’s signature. Social media users were quick to react to the bizarre display.

Several people compared it to the biblical story of the Israelites worshiping a golden calf before being rebuked by Moses.

The story of the golden calf in Exodus 32 has some very important lessons regarding things like this.

If you read the story in Exodus 32 and beyond, I think it powerfully demonstrates both God’s hatred for sin and wickedness, the consequences of sin, and His mercy to those who sin and repent.

Aaron not only (clearly) sinned in creating the golden calf and allowing the people to worship it, but it appears he also sinned in his attempts to lie about the fact of this (see 32:21–24) and shift responsibility for his sin to others.

Moses gave the people an opportunity to repent when (in v. 26) he “stood in the gate of the camp” and said, “Who is on the Lord’s side? Let them come to me.” Those who came he instructed to kill those who refused with the sword (vv. 27–29). This basically saved the lives of those who rallied to Moses and the Lord. Three thousand men did not, and were killed as a result that day.

And even with this judgment inflicted, there was still a consequence to be suffered (the plague which descended, see v. 35), demonstrating that sin always has consequences — even to those who have been forgiven, as well as to those who may be innocent.

I think it’s clear that Aaron repented and rallied to the side of the Lord and to Moses, as he appears in subsequent chapters. But did he suffer in the plague of v. 35, and in other ways, due to the sin he was complicit in? We don’t know for sure, but I wouldn’t be surprised.

But, why do folks still continue to believe in and teach observably false doctrines and ideas? Why do they continue to bow down and worship this worthless golden calf they’ve made for themselves? Why do they continue to make common cause with, and even help the efforts of, groups that are actively and deliberately fighting against the Kingdom of God?

The answer is as simple as it is tragic.

They’re deceived.

The truth is right in front of their faces but the spirit of anti-Christ, which is the same spirit that deceived Eve in Genesis chapter 3, and which deceived the Israelites into worshipping the original golden calf, has never stopped deceiving the human race ever since. This anti-Christ spirit infected even the church fathers and God's chosen ones. (Matthew 24:24)
