Propitiate: To gain or regain the favor of; Appease.
Propitiatory: Oracle; The cover of the Ark of the Testimony containing the two cherubim between which God sat and conversed with the high priest.
Expiate: Atone; To give satisfaction [reparation for an insult; contentment; gratification] for.
Testimony: The two tablets of stone containing the 10 commandments.
Emissary: Agent, especially a secret agent; One who acts for another.
Afflict your souls: Fast from all food and drink.
