Se trata de la historia de un forajido que transcurre en los últimos años del viejo oeste estadounidense, en 1911, y narra la historia del antiguo bandido John Marston, que es chantajeado por los agentes federales que tienen amenazada a su familia para que ayude a imponer la ley en la frontera mexicano-estadounidense y capture a su antiguo compañero, y actual bandido, Bill Williamson. La acción del videojuego se sitúa en los estados ficticios de New Austin, Nuevo Paraíso y West Elizabeth.
The game is an outlaw story set in the final years of the American Old West in 1911, and tells the story of former bandit John Marston, who is blackmailed by federal agents who have threatened his family into helping enforce the law on the Mexican-American border and capture his former partner, and current bandit, Bill Williamson. The action of the video game takes place in the fictional states of New Austin, Nuevo Paraíso and West Elizabeth.
