The Weaponized Heart | History Repeats | Last of the Mohicans (1992) | Lens of Colonialism & Zionism

I’ve been trying to find a way to communicate how we are repeating history with US-Israel policy & it occurred to me that Native Americans, the British & French…Colonialism in America…is a perfect metaphor for discussing blood connections, family, loyalty…what is a race or a religion when war is involved…moreover, how do these things change as different groups interact with one another and learn the humanity of the other.

Last of the Mohicans (1991) directed by Michael Mann is a nearly perfect film top down. It is difficult to find anything wrong with it. The pacing is perfect & the way it portrays American history in a relatable way cannot be overlooked, especially as Americans are being told that we are somehow ‘bound’ to Israel via some sort of religious perspective.

When you think about it, Last of the Mohicans will explain Zionism, Israel & America today using the lens of ‘then’…and rather that write it all down here, I’d rather just show you & explain it.

It also made me think of what I’m going to refer to as “The Weaponized Heart”…a concept I’d like to discuss in more detail after the film. Bloodline loyalty…loyalty to country…loyalty to religion or faith…loyalty to a tribe…how these ingrained loyalties & connections within us are exploited to bring out the worst in our character when they should bring out the best.

Last of the Mohicans is useful in discussing this. The plot revolves around a tribe of 3 Mohicans, one of whom is White but was raised by his adopted Mohican father & brother. In the midst of a war between American settlers, learning their way among living with the Native Americans & indigenous tribes…who should he be loyal to? A white man raised by Mohicans…is he British or French or ‘American’ before he is Mohican? Is he Mohican as a matter of ‘idea’ or is it a deeper ethnic identity? His father, a Mohican, treated his white adopted son as another Mohican…then what should this man consider himself?

Is he Mohican…can he be? Will he be considered Mohican in equal measure by another tribe? Does it matter to them or him? How does this play on blood loyalty inform the debate surrounding Zionism & Israel?

I keep thinking about this with Zionism, Judaism & Israel…because if you really understand Last of the Mohicans, then it will be easier to unpack what Zionism is compared to Judaism…what a Nationalist organization is compared to a Religious one…how loyalties are confusing to understand from the outside looking in when it comes to a religion vs a ‘race of people’…how that is all interpreted person to person…

Even if you don’t understand all that after tonight…I hope the film stays with you & resonates somewhere down the line. If it doesn’t make sense how this all ties together now…perhaps it will soon.
