Lancaster Sheriff's Station Deputies Chapman and Montanez received a call of a traffic hazard, a wheelchair in the middle of the road. When they arrived, they did find the wheelchair on the side of the road, but with an elderly female sitting in it! Watch what happens when an elderly resident finds herself stuck in the roadway.

Lancaster Sheriff's Station Deputies Chapman and Montanez received a call of a traffic hazard on a hot afternoon and immediately took action. The concerned caller reported that a wheelchair was stuck and sitting at the side of the road, and an elderly female citizen was sitting in that wheelchair in the hot, desert climate. The caller was worried for the woman and asked if the deputies could go out there and assist her. Without hesitation, Deputies Chapman and Montanez hit the road on route to save the lady in the wheelchair.

When they arrived, they found the wheelchair on the side of the road and with an elderly female patiently sitting in it awaiting rescue! Her motorized wheelchair had run out of power and she was stranded and had been for over an hour, sitting out in the hot sun at the side of the road. When she saw them pull up, she was so grateful that someone must have called them in and they were there to help her with her problem. She had been sitting their stranded for a long time and was hot, thirsty and getting worried that she would be stuck out there forever.

Deputies Chapman and Montanez quickly offered her a ride home, but she was very upset about leaving her only means of mobility behind. The woman had no way to coming back to get it and leaving it on the side of the road was not an option for her. The wheelchair was too heavy to lift and put in the trunk and they were unable to fold it up because of the battery pack. After quick measurement, they concluded that they would not be able to fit in their patrol vehicle and had to look at alternative solutions to the elderly lady’s situation. After much discussion, they came up with a plan that would get the lady home safe and sound with her wheelchair.

Deputy Montanez stepped up and offered her a perfect solution. He decided he would offer to push the woman and her wheelchair to her home and safely deliver her. Her home was about one mile away. The Deputy, in full uniform and boots stood behind the wheelchair and started pushing her slowly in the heat and humidity of the desert sun. Watch as Deputy Chapman teases him about his "slow" pace. He grabs the video camera and captures this courageous footage, making sure to get a glimpse of the tachometer, clocking in less than 1 miles per hour! The Deputy behind the wheel as says the other “you can pick it up now, you are only going about one mile an hour” as the pushing hero turns around and starts laughing, sweat rolling down his face! You can hear our elderly friend getting a good laugh out of it. She couldn’t be more thankful for the service she is receiving.
