Is this a viable alternative to income tax?

In his first term in office, President Donald Trump implemented tariffs on many crucial products, including steel, aluminum and semiconductors, including GPUs and AI processing chips.
The pandemic only heightened these supply chain issues. During the crypto mining boom, Americans paid at least 25% extra in tariffs on their own products which were being manufactured overseas.
As a result, while U.S. consumers paid more, foreign buyers in non-tariffed markets had access to the same cutting-edge technology at a relatively lower cost, strengthening their AI and crypto capabilities at American expense.
Biden kept these tariffs in place and even expanded them. His administration cited concerns over China’s trade practices and the need to protect domestic industries, which both he and Trump knew were practically nonexistent, but The result was continued price increases for American consumers.
In 2025, Trump again doubled down on increasing the tariffs, The primary effect of which is to lock out many Americans from their own AI and crypto hardware, in the disguise of fighting against foreign AI and crypto supremacy.
Tariffs only work when you have a manufacturing base to protect that is able to meet domestic demand. When timed otherwise, they behave the same as other tools to create and maintain a monopoly, such as when a company sells a product at a loss to gain market share, only to increase prices as soon as they have bought out the competition, leaving consumers with no alternative.
Today, the Trump-Biden tariffs protect a practically non-existent domestic industry, and their primary effect is to dump state-of-the-art AI technology into the hands of foreigners at American expense.

Set, Spike!
