Joseph never saw his circumstances in unexpected ‘afflictions’ through the eyes of self-centeredness (He never said, ‘Woe is me! Why me? I thought God loved, watched over, and protected me’… etc).
See Romans 5…
(1) “Therefore (Abraham/we unregenerate) being justified (saved by faith in the Word of God and therefore born again from above) by (the gift of grace through persuaded) faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:
(2) By whom also (in addition) we have (continuing) access by (being a regenerate believer unto a fully persuaded) faith into this (channel of) grace wherein we stand (being under the law of the spirit of life in Christ), and rejoice in hope of the (‘apprehending that for which I was apprehended,’ the prize attained by works of loving faith; the First Resurrection) glory of God.
(3) And not only so (in light of our understanding of what fully persuaded is, we are not satisfied in just being justified), but we glory in tribulations (afflictions) also: knowing that tribulation (afflictions) worketh patience (not to surrender our faith to circumstances and succumb under trial, tests, temptations);
(4) And patience, experience (developed in character); and (capacitated in character) experience, hope (desire of something good with expectation of obtaining it, particularly the First Resurrection at the Second Coming of Jesus… read 1st John 3:2-3):
(5) And (this) hope (in spite of carnal reasoning and the World’s opinions) maketh not ashamed; because the love of God (within triumphs over self-centeredness in all its reasonings) is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us. (This love founded and established upon our revelation of His great love first towards us when we consider that)
(6) For when we were yet without strength (Colossians 1:21), in due time Christ died for the ungodly.
(7) For scarcely for a righteous man will one die yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die.
(8) But God commendeth (declared, manifested) his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners (children of wrath), Christ died for us (how is it then that you can question His love for you?).
(9) Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him (when He pours out His wrath on His enemies, so don’t be deceived into thinking that your afflictions are in any way the wrath of God).
(10) For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled (/the alienated feelings of the Creator and the fallen created man are changed towards each other) to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life (Joseph, a believer in Yahweh, {a type for the Lord} was cast into the Pit, yet taken out of it, who through faithfulness not only becomes the preserver of his brethren’s lives from drought and death, but their capacitating means by which they will rule with Joseph in the fat of the land).

(11) And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.
(12) “Wherefore, as by one man (Adam, who sold his firstborn blessing and lost the image of God of love) sin (self-consciousness/self-centeredness) entered into the world, and death (separation from God here and in the hereafter) by sin; and so death (by the law of Genesis that everything produces after its own kind) passed upon all men (Adam at first having no sin nature and the image of God; that is to say love, yet transgressed and lost the ‘image’ of God, and his seed then being knit to him by the flesh are made in Adam’s image {Genesis 5:3}), for that all have sinned (or are born then with the nature of sin of self-centeredness as sons of Adam):
(13) For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law.
(14) Nevertheless death reigned (that is to say, even men who were not imputed sin {Romans 4:8} were yet subject to the weight of the nature of sin, unable to escape its image) from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam’s transgression, who (before his fall) is the figure of him (Jesus, the incarnate Son of Man, born in the image of God, without the sin nature) that was to come (according to Genesis 3:15, and destroy the works of the devil).
(15) But not as the offense, so also is the free gift. For if through....
