Trump's Legacy in Gaza: Shifting Sands in the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict
Donald Trump has made various statements about Gaza throughout his political career, both before and during his presidency. Here are some key points regarding his stance on Gaza:
Recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's Capital : One of the most significant actions taken by Trump regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict was his decision in December 2017 to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and begin the process of moving the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. This move was widely criticized by Palestinian leaders and many in the international community, who viewed it as a departure from longstanding U.S. policy and an obstacle to peace negotiations.
Peace Plan ("Deal of the Century") : In January 2020, Trump unveiled his administration's peace plan for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, often referred to as the "Deal of the Century." The plan proposed significant territorial changes, including allowing Israel to annex parts of the West Bank, while also proposing the creation of a Palestinian state with limited sovereignty. The plan was largely rejected by Palestinian leaders, who criticized it for favoring Israel and ignoring key Palestinian demands, such as the right of return for refugees and East Jerusalem as the capital of a future Palestinian state.
Aid Cuts to Palestinians : During his presidency, Trump significantly reduced U.S. financial support to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), which provides aid to Palestinian refugees. He also cut direct aid to the Palestinian Authority, citing their refusal to engage in peace negotiations. These moves were seen as pressuring the Palestinians to accept U.S.-brokered deals that were unfavorable to them.
Support for Israel : Trump consistently expressed strong support for Israel, both rhetorically and through policy decisions. His administration moved away from the traditional U.S. role as a mediator in the conflict, instead taking a more pro-Israel stance. This included supporting Israeli settlements in the West Bank, which are considered illegal under international law by many countries and organizations.
Gaza Blockade and Conflict : Trump did not introduce major new policies specifically targeting Gaza during his presidency. However, his broader approach to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, including support for Israeli policies and cuts to Palestinian aid, indirectly affected conditions in Gaza. The blockade of Gaza, enforced primarily by Israel and Egypt, continued during his tenure, leading to ongoing humanitarian challenges in the region.
