EMD introduced the GP30 in 1963 and the Santa Railway purchased 75 of them, preferring them over General Electrics U25B. Santa Fe Railway assigned the new units to the 1200 Class, which were numbered 1200 - 1274.
By 1979 Santa Fe started rebuilding their GP30s. The first group rebuilt at Santa Fe's Cleburne Shops were numbered 3200 - 3284. The 3200 Class received air conditioning, D77 traction motors, EMD's 645 engine, and yellow warbonnet paint scheme.
In 1982 they were rebuilt again at the Cleburne Shops and were numbered 2700 2784. This rebuild included smoke lifters, to help keep the exhaust out of the engine intake, and snow shrouds to keep snow out of the intake filters. Sam has decided to convert his 1200 Class Proto 2000 1200 Class GP30 to the 2700 Class GP30u.
Follow along with Sam as he explains the development of the GP30 locomotive and then shows how he made the conversion to a GP30u.
