In the opening line of Genesis, there are seven words, and the central word, untranslated in English, is two Hebrew letters, the first and last letters of the Hebrew alphabet: aleph and tav. This is Yeshua! REV 22:13, “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last.”
Each of the key words in GEN 1:1 are repeated by multiples of seven in GEN 1:2-2:3. “GOD” = 35 x (7 x 5) “land” = 21x (7 x 3) “skies” = 21x (7 x 3).To say that this is a coincidence is absurd. The number seven is completeness, and we see that in the lunar calendar of moon cycles. Approx a 29 day cycle. The biblical Hebrew word for month in fact means a new moon. Each month consisted of 29.5 days, and each month consisted of four 7.3 day cycles, making a complete cycle of time.
The seventh day is blessed by GOD’s presence for the sake of the created world, for all nature, and for all living beings. The seventh day is simply announced. There is no mention of evening or morning, like there is for the first 6. Literarily, the sun has not yet set on GOD’s Sabbath.
The original meaning of the letter Zayin is a sword or sharp weapon, but it also refers to food and sustenance. Some scholars say that the meaning behind this is that while pointless bloodshed is certainly not condoned by the LORD GOD, we sometimes must do battle to defend one’s way of life. This is certainly true in a nation.
29:1 On the first day of the seventh month hold a sacred assembly and do no regular work. It is a day for you to sound the trumpets.
The phrase a pleasing smell or aroma appears for the first time in all of Scripture after the Flood when Noach brings burnt offerings. So, the phrase really means that the LORD GOD is satisfied, even that is somewhat of an anthropopathism.
As the seventh day is especially sacred, so is the seventh month and therefore the first day of the seventh month, marked by the new moon. That day was to have a sacred convocation a holy mikra (rehearsal) marked by abstinence from work (this would be the 4th such convocation of the year).
It will be a day of trumpet blowing for you (yôm terû‘â). The name day of trumpet blowing is unique here. This feast was connected with Rosh Hashanah or New Year. The major activity of the day seems to be the blowing of the trumpet.
The Feast of Trumpets was the third feast regarded as a sacred gathering (a holy convocation) and a day to do no customary work. Later in Jewish tradition this feast became the time of the new year (Rosh Hashanah). The blowing of the trumpet on this feast is the blowing of the shophar, the ram’s horn, rather than the silver trumpet of NUM Ch 10.
One young bull, one ram, and seven lambs: These made up the burnt offering to be sacrificed on the Feast of Trumpets, together with a grain offering measured to each sacrificial animal and a sin offering of one kid of the goats. The special sacrifices made on the Feast of Trumpets did not replace the daily, weekly, or monthly sacrifices mentioned.
