Who are the Kurds?
Between 25 and 35 million Kurds inhabit a mountainous region straddling the borders of Turkey, Iraq, Syria, Iran and Armenia. They make up the fourth-largest ethnic group in the Middle East, but they have never obtained a permanent nation state.
Where do the Kurds come from?
The Kurds are one of the indigenous peoples of the Mesopotamian plains and the highlands in what are now south-eastern Turkey, north-eastern Syria, northern Iraq, north-western Iran and south-western Armenia.
The Medes are an ancient Iranian people mentioned in the Bible, and the Kurds are considered descendants of the Medes. The Bible also mentions the Medes in the context of God's judgment against Babylon.
The Kurds are a stateless nation, meaning they do not have their own country. They are a non-Arab ethnic group who live in Turkey, Iran, Iraq, and Syria.
Nechirvan Idris Barzani became the New Kurdish Leader and President on Oct. 20, 2024.
Nechirvan Idris Barzani (Arabic: نيجرفان بارزاني; Kurdish: نێچیرڤان بارزانی, romanized: Nêçîrvan Barzanî; born 21 September 1966) is an Iraqi Kurdish politician serving as the second President of the Kurdistan Region. He was elected into office by the Kurdistan Region Parliament in June 2019. Nechirvan Barzani was appointed as Vice President of the Kurdistan Democratic Party since 2010. He previously served as Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government from March 2007 to August 2009 and March 2012 to May 2019.[5] Nechirvan Barzani is also the founder of the University Of Kurdistan Hewlêr, the region's top ranking university located in Erbil.
Darius the Mede is mentioned in the Book of Daniel as King of Babylon between Belshazzar and Cyrus the Great, but he is not known to secular history and there is no space in the historical timeline between those two verified rulers. Belshazzar, who is often mentioned as king in the book of Daniel, was in fact the crown-prince and governor while his father was in Arabia from ca. 553 to 543 BCE, but Nabonidus had returned to Babylon years before the fall of the Babylonian empire.
