Advanced airless tires

Advanced airless tires. The Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials (KIMM) developed an adaptive “morphing wheel.” This airless tire changes the stiffness to tackle different terrains. It can shift from rigid to soft, to overcome obstacles. Inspired by the surface tension of water droplets, it uses a chain-like outer ring and wire spokes. Adjusting spoke tension lets the wheel modify its shape and rigidity in real-time. When soft, it can climb stairs and maneuver rough terrain with ease. Still in development, its potential applications are rapidly expanding. KIMM envisions these wheels for wheelchairs, delivery robots, and future vehicles. Would you trust these on your ride?
