Thirsting for God: The Transformative Power of Prayer and Suffering
Tonight we will explore the themes of prayer and suffering, how they are intertwined, and how they bring us closer to God. We'll reflect on powerful words from St. Agatha and the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which remind us of God’s unfailing presence in our lives and His divine thirst for our love.
One of the most profound truths of our faith is that God desires us — He thirsts for us. This divine thirst is beautifully described in the Catechism of the Catholic Church:
Whether we realize it or not, prayer is the encounter of God’s thirst with ours. God thirsts that we may thirst for him…Prayer is the response of faith to the free promise of salvation and also a response of love to the thirst of the only Son of God…the life of prayer is the habit of being in the presence of the thrice-holy God and in communion with him.
God is not a distant or indifferent deity. He is a loving Father who seeks an intimate relationship with each of us. But relationships require communication, and for Catholics, that communication happens through prayer.

"Lord, my Creator, You have protected me since I was in the cradle. You have taken me from the love of the world and given me patience to suffer. Now receive my spirit."

We, too, are called to embrace suffering with patience, knowing that it purifies us and brings us closer to God. This doesn't mean that suffering is easy or that we should seek it out.
