How Did We Get Here

“Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.” Proverbs 14:34

The United States of American has a rich godly heritage and a Christian foundation, but “If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do?” Psalms 11:3

Alexis de Tocqueville, a Frenchman, came to America in the early nineteenth century to discover the secret of her greatness. He wrote . . .

“I sought for the greatness and genius of America in her commodious harbours and her ample rivers, and it was not there; in her fertile land and boundless prairies, and it was not there. Not until I went to the churches of America and heard her pulpits aflame with righteousness did I understand the secret of her genius and power. America is great because she is good, and if America ceases to be good, America will cease to be great.”

If we ever hope to be truly great again, it will not come through political power or our own devices. The only hope we have of being truly great again is for God's people to do what God told us to do in His Word —

“If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14
