The Global Economy Report: A New And Dangerous Tariff War w/ Costas Lapavitsas

Within days of taking office, the second Trump administration has announced the imposition of massive tariffs on Canada, Mexico and China.

Canada and Mexico have vowed retaliation with huge tariffs of their own. China, too, has vowed retaliatory tariffs and has announced its intention to file suit against the United States at the World Trade Organization.

Where will all of this lead?

On the first episode of The Global Economy Report, Dimitri Lascaris spoke with Professor Costas Lapavitsas about the new tariff war.

Lapvitsas is a professor of economics at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. In Greece’s January 2015 general election, he was elected to Greece’s Parliament as a member of the left-wing Syriza party, which ran on a platform of opposition to austerity. In August 2015, after Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras capitulated to the austerity demands of Greece’s troika of creditors, Lapavitsas defected to a new party called “Popular Unity”.

Lascaris and Lapavitsas also discussed the emergence of a new artificial intelligence company in China, DeepSeek.
