This video is filled to the brim with immaculate photographs from the 19th century, attributed to Carleton Watkins. Watkins gained infamy as a photographer who worked directly with the American government to document much of the Western United States for the first time. He was also one of the most infamous photographers of the 19th century, and yet he ended up living penniless, inside an asylum. We will look through his greatest photographs dated to the years 1860 through 1885.

Adding to this discussion, we will entertain a theory proposed in the first compressive history of the Mexican Indigenous People (Aztecs; also referred to in this account as the Chichimecas). In this earliest history, it is theorized that the indigenous people of Mexico had arrived to that land in a massive boat, from a kingdom known as “Tartary” or “Grand Tartaria”.

This account of Mexican History was actually written by the world famous historian, and member of the Aztec Nobility, Fernando de Alva Cortés Ixtlilxóchitl, in 1610. We will get into all of that, and more, in today’s video. I’ve also gone through and labeled each photograph with the proper title and date when applicable. Please save any of these images to your own collections.
