Golden Rule (Golden Law)
The Golden Rule is the principle of treating others as one wants to be treated. Various expressions of this rule can be found in the tenets of most religions & creeds through the ages
The idea dates at least to the early Confucian times (551–479 BCE) Rushworth Kidder, who identifies the concept appearing prominently in Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, Taoism, Zoroastrianism & "the rest of the world's major religions" Simon Blackburn also states that the Golden Rule can be "found in some form in almost every ethical tradition"
Ancient Egypt - Middle Kingdom (2040 – 1650 BCE): "Now this is the command: "Do to the doer to make him do."
Ancient India - Mahabharata:(between 400 BCE & 400 CE) One "should never do something to others that one would regard as an injury to one's own self. In brief, this is dharma. Anything else is succumbing to desire."
Tamil tradition - Book of Virtue of the Tirukkuṛaḷ (1st century BCE - 5th century CE) "Do not do to others what you know has hurt yourself."
Ancient Greece - in its prohibitive (negative) form, "Do not do to others that which angers you when they do it to you." -Socrates (436 – 338 BCE)
Ancient Persia - Zoroastrianism (300 BCE – 1000 CE) "That nature alone is good which refrains from doing to another whatsoever is not good for itself." & "Whatever is disagreeable to yourself do not do unto others.
Ancient Rome - Seneca the Younger (4 BCE – 65 CE) Stoicism (300 BCE – 200 CE) "Treat your inferior as you would wish your superior to treat you."
Quality of life
the degree to which an individual is healthy, comfortable & able to participate in or enjoy life events.
What determines quality of life? People's evaluations of their quality of life are made within horizons of possibilities that they see for themselves & therefore are a fundamental component of their identity. (identity: noun - the fact of being who or what a person or thing is - the distinguishing character or personality of an individual: individuality - the relation established by psychological identification)
These horizons are determined by factors such as social class, age, sex, ethnic group, sexuality, disability & personal biography. Embodying overall well-being & happiness, including access to school, work opportunities, absence of military conflict or threats, as well as good physical & emotional health. It's relative, subjective & has intangible components, such as spiritual beliefs & a sense of belonging
Quality of life
is defined as "an individual's perception of their position in life in the context of the culture & value systems in which they live & in relation to their goals, expectations, standards & concerns". Standard indicators of the quality of life include wealth, employment, the environment, physical & mental health, education, recreation & leisure time, social belonging, religious beliefs, safety, security & freedom.
3 Natural Rights According to Locke 1) Life - everyone is entitled to live once they are created 2) Liberty - everyone is entitled to do anything they want to so long as it doesn't conflict with the 1st right 3) Estate - everyone is entitled to own all they create or gain through gift or trade so long as it doesn't conflict with the 1st, 2 rights

Considered one of the first of the British empiricists, following the tradition of Sir Francis Bacon, Locke is equally important to social contract theory.

Central to Enlightenment thought were the use & celebration of reason, the power by which humans understand the universe & improve their own condition. The goals of rational humanity were considered to be knowledge, freedom, & happiness.
The Age of Enlightenment, or simply the Enlightenment
-an intellectual & philosophical movement that dominated Europe in the 17th & 18th centuries with global influences & effects
-The Enlightenment included a range of ideas centered on the value of human happiness, the pursuit of knowledge obtained by means of reason & the evidence of the senses, & ideals such as liberty, progress, toleration, fraternity, constitutional government & separation of church & state
Rene Descartes Discourse on the Method in 1637, featuring his famous dictum, Cogito, ergo sum ("I think, therefore I am")
date its beginning 1715 & its end 1789 the French Revolution. Many historians now date the end of the Enlightenment as the start of the 19th century
The ideas of the Enlightenment paved the way for the political revolutions of the 18th & 19th centuries - including liberalism, communism, & neoclassicism, trace their intellectual heritage to the Enlightenment.
