With the Collective West’s keen interest in Georgian democracy, you would be forgiven for thinking that democracy was flourishing in the American sphere of influence. If so, you would probably have been very surprised to hear that the President of South Korea, Mr Yoon Suk-Yeol, declared Martial Law last week.
At 27 minutes past ten in the evening, Korean time, soldiers, police, and special forces took over much of Seoul and attempted to secure the parliament buildings. In the footage, helicopters can be seen landing on futsal pitches in Seoul.
This announcement led to mass protests on the streets of Seoul and other cities. A quorum of senators forced their way into the National Assembly and revoked martial law. Before the night was over, President Yoon had ended martial law – even his own party didn’t support this move. The country is now seeing widespread strikes and protests calling for his resignation, and the National Assembly has tried to impeach him. So why are things so bad in South Korea?
