"VAGUE VACATION" Chapter 39 'WELL MET' a journey through France by Joan Marshall Grant

In 1946 Joan Grant and her second husband Charles Beatty escaped England and rationing for a motoring holiday round France and Switzerland. Petrol was scarce, £75 was all they were allowed to take out of the country, prices had soared, but the food!…the wine!
Joan Marshall Grant was born in 1907, and was educated by listening to the conversations of her father and his fellow scientists, having at 15 refused to continue more formal studies as a protest against the dismissal of a favourite governess. She then worked in her fathers mosquito control institute, played ‘real’ tennis, in his court at Hayling Island, and Golf for Hampshire, until she married Lesley Grant in 1927. Their daughter Gillian, who was born in 1930, has a daughter and two sons, and is married to sculptor, David Wynne.
