Jakl 2.0 vs Jakl Gen 1, Palmetto State Armory's Next Generation Bufferless Rifle
Palmetto State Armory has recently showed the new Jake 2.0. Is it better than the Jakl Gen 1? We take a Quick Look at the two rifles and talk about the pros and cons to both versions.
In this video, the presenter goes into detail about the Jackal Gen 1 and the upcoming Jackal 2.0 from Palmetto State Armory. Here’s a breakdown of the key points:
Jackal Gen 1:
The presenter shares their experience with the Jackal Gen 1, which has been in use for about a year. They mention that it’s been mostly smooth sailing, except for one malfunction due to a lack of gas block adjustment while using a suppressor. Other than that, it has worked reliably with a variety of ammo types (steel, brass, etc.).
The Jackal uses a long-stroke gas piston system and a bufferless buttstock, which allows for a folding stock that operates both folded and unfolded, making it great for concealment or storage.
The Gen 1 is compatible with various AR-15 lower receivers, which adds to its modularity. The presenter took advantage of deals to buy the upper and lower separately, which saved them some money.
Jackal 2.0:
The biggest change in the Jackal 2.0 is that it will use a proprietary lower receiver, meaning users can no longer use an AR-15 lower with the Jackal 2.0 upper. This move sacrifices some of the modularity of the Gen 1, where users could mix and match parts.
A positive aspect of this change is that the 2.0 upper will no longer need an adapter plate, making for a cleaner and more streamlined system. The Gen 1 had a plate to cover gaps and prevent debris or gases from escaping, but the 2.0 will eliminate this need for a better overall fit.
The new lower receiver will include an ambidextrous bolt release, which is a notable upgrade from the Gen 1. While ambi lowers are available for AR-15s, they’re often expensive, so this feature is a nice addition.
The 2.0 features some weight-saving modifications, like lightning cuts on the receiver, although the exact weight isn't provided. The presenter also mentions that the Gen 1 weighs about 8 pounds without optics, ammo, or a magazine.
The handguard has been slightly thinned to accommodate a better "C-clamp" grip. However, the presenter personally doesn't use the C-clamp grip and prefers a modified grip, but for those who do, the change is a welcome upgrade.
One major upgrade is the charging handle, which is now a spring-loaded, folding, non-reciprocating design. It’s a big improvement over the Gen 1's fixed charging handle, offering a more refined user experience, with a cutout in the handguard for easier manipulation.
Barrel Swap and Caliber Options:
A significant feature in the 2.0 is the ability to swap barrels more easily. The presenter has struggled to find replacement barrels for the Gen 1, but the 2.0 is supposed to make barrel swaps much more user-friendly. The initial calibers available will likely include 5.56 and 300 Blackout, but the presenter hopes for additional calibers like 6mm ARC and 6.5 Grendel.
Other Thoughts:
While the 2.0 brings several positive changes, the presenter is concerned that it will be more expensive than the Gen 1, which costs around $1,100–$1,300 for a full rifle. They anticipate the 2.0 could cost $1,500 or more, positioning it as a higher-end offering from Palmetto State Armory.
Lastly, the presenter shows some excitement for a potential project with the Jackal Gen 1, modifying it to fit a Desert Tech Quattro magazine (a 51-round magazine), though this modification wouldn’t be possible with the 2.0 due to its proprietary design.
The video concludes with a mention of additional content available on Rumble, inviting viewers to follow there for more videos.
