America is the land of milk and honey - the economic engine that changed the world did so through the birth of the Panama Canal. Our free society, our political ascendency, even our scientific prowess depend on the free flow of information and goods - protected by US military dominance - just as with the Panama Canal. But, if the United States' has an Achilles heel, its our reliance on the Panama Canal that Jimmy Carter sold for a dollar back in 1979. And the treaty through which this betrayal was purchased also provides the new guards of protection President Trump is now invoking.
To provide a sense of scale and importance, from an international trade point of view, more than 70% of our Gross Domestic Product in trade is reliant upon open and fair passage through the Panama Canal. If a foreign adversary wanted to destroy the United States without firing a shot, they could just stop traffic through the Panama Canal. A ship crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore on March 26, 2024. The collision stopped not only the traffic on the bridge, but shut down all port traffic for months.
If US Trade were interrupted for even a week, it would have massive and disruptive impact on the entire US economy. If the interruption were to extend past 2 months - it would cause economic devastation much worse than the Great Depression. Thus, China's covert purchase of control over the canal can be viewed as a very provocative, military act - through private proxies. They could destroy the United States without firing a shot.
