"The Ghanaian Head of State, Colonel I. K. Acheampong, attended a "durbar" marking the end of the Odwira Festival celebrated by the people in the Breman Asikuma district of Ghana ...

The durbar was held in honour of the Head of State to round off the annual Odwira Festival, an important religious and social event to the people of Breman Asikuma, about 80 miles (about 130 kilometres) from the capital, Accra.

It was an occasion for the villagers to display their traditional pomp and pageantry. The Paramount Chief, Nana Omanhene, presented gold trinkets to Colonel Acheampong.

Colonel Acheampong spoke to the people during the function and appealed to landlords to release more land to farmers to enable them to increase production in food and cash crops.

He urged the farmers to diversify their crops. He said Ghana's economy rested on fairly shaky foundations because the country relied solely on one crop -- cocoa -- for its economic survival."
