SRINIVASA RAMANUJAN: The mathematical that knew the infinity
Srinivasa Ramanujan was an Indian mathematician who made significant contributions to mathematical analysis, number theory, infinite series, and continued fractions. Although he had almost no formal training in pure mathematics, his work was recognized for its originality and depth¹.
Born on December 22, 1887 in Erode, India, Ramanujan showed exceptional talent for mathematics from an early age. At age 11, he had exhausted the mathematical knowledge of two college students who were staying at his house. At age 13, he mastered advanced trigonometry and began developing sophisticated theorems on his own¹.
Despite facing financial and health difficulties, Ramanujan continued to work in mathematics and published several articles in the Journal of the Indian Mathematical Society. His work caught the attention of British mathematician G.H. Hardy, who invited him to Cambridge to work together¹.
During his time at Cambridge, Ramanujan made important contributions to number theory and infinite series. However, his health deteriorated and he returned to India in 1919, where he died in 1920 at the age of 32¹.
Despite his short life, Ramanujan left a lasting legacy in the world of mathematics. His work has inspired generations of mathematicians and continues to be studied and applied today¹.
