The Australian Fabians, also referred to as the Australian Fabian Society, is an independent left-leaning think tank established in 1947.

The organization aims to foster "progressive political thinking" and promote a "progressive political culture." The Australian Fabians maintain strong connections with the Australian Labor Party (ALP) and the broader Australian labor movement. Numerous former ALP prime ministers, federal ministers, and state premiers have been active members of the Australian Fabians during their tenures.

The position of patron for the Australian Fabians is currently unoccupied, having previously been held by media commentator and feminist Eva Cox, as well as the late Gough Whitlam, a former Australian prime minister.

Since the conclusion of the Second World War, the Australian Fabians have played a pivotal role in shaping public policy in Australia, with many of its members occupying significant political positions within various levels of government.

History The initial foray into Fabianism in Australia began in 1891 in Adelaide, led by Rev. Charles Marson, who had joined the Fabians in London in 1885. He attracted trade unionists such as David Charleston, Robert Guthrie, and John McPherson, along with social reformers like James and Lucy Morice, to form the first overseas branch of the UK Fabian Society. These Australian members maintained their affiliation for a decade until the Adelaide branch was dissolved in 1902.

A subsequent South Australian branch held its inaugural dinner in 1938, but the society as it exists today was not established until 1947. In the 1960s, the Victorian branch was closely associated with the Participants grouping within the Victorian Labor Party, which became a key supporter of Whitlam and opposed the hard-left faction that dominated the Victorian Central Executive. At that time, the Victorian Labor Party was led by the historic left faction, while Whitlam and other states were aligned with the historic right faction.
