The group of Jesus-loving sugar warriors, mostly white politicians and businessmen who Sanford Ballard Dole was aligned with, eventually overthrew the Hawaiian monarchy in 1893 and took over the island nation. They established the Republic of Hawaii, and Dole was elected its president.
