The Maya is a Mesoamerican civilization known for their writing, art, architecture, and mathematical and astronomical systems. The Mayans built stone cities, many of which were abandoned long before the arrival of Europeans, others were inhabited even after. The calendar developed by the Mayans was also used by other peoples of Central America. A hieroglyphic writing system was used, and numerous inscriptions on monuments have been preserved. The Mayans created an effective farming system and had deep knowledge of astronomy. The descendants of the ancient Mayans are not only the modern Mayan peoples, who have preserved the language of their ancestors, but also part of the Spanish-speaking population of the southern states of Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Belize and El Salvador. And some Mayan cities are included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites: Palenque, Chichen Itza, Uxmal in Mexico, Tikal and Quirigua in Guatemala, Copan in Honduras, Hoya de Ceren in El Salvador.
