(1988.01.25) Bam Bam Bigelow & Hulk Hogan vs Ted Dibiase & Virgil - MSG - WWF
On January 25, 1988, Bam Bam Bigelow and Hulk Hogan teamed up to face the duo of Ted DiBiase and Virgil in a tag team match at Madison Square Garden (MSG) in WWF. This match was part of the larger feud involving Hulk Hogan and the Million Dollar Man, Ted DiBiase, who had been embroiled in a rivalry for months.
Hulk Hogan, the face of the WWF during this era, was known for his larger-than-life persona and his never-say-die attitude. He was always involved in high-profile matches, and his pairing with Bam Bam Bigelow for this tag team contest was a unique one. Bigelow, known for his impressive agility for a big man, had recently joined the WWF and was making a name for himself with his hard-hitting style and memorable matches.
Ted DiBiase, the "Million Dollar Man," was one of the top heels of the time, known for his wealth and arrogance. His character often involved him flaunting his money and purchasing favors from others. In this instance, he had Virgil, his loyal bodyguard, by his side. Virgil was DiBiase’s muscle and enforcer, but he was also often treated poorly, leading to friction between the two.
The match was typical of the WWF's storytelling at the time, with Hogan and Bigelow playing the roles of the heroic faces, while DiBiase and Virgil were the sneaky heels. The crowd at Madison Square Garden was firmly behind Hogan, and there was a strong sense of anticipation, as fans were eager to see the iconic "Hulkster" in action.
In the match, Hogan and Bigelow were dominant, with Hogan's signature moves like the big boot and leg drop on display. Bigelow showcased his agility and power with his hard-hitting offense. DiBiase and Virgil, on the other hand, relied on cheap tactics and underhanded moves to try and gain the upper hand. However, Hogan’s power and Bigelow’s athleticism were too much for the duo.
Ultimately, Hogan and Bigelow secured the victory, with Hogan pinning one of the heels to end the match. The win helped further elevate the partnership between Hogan and Bigelow, even though it was a relatively short-lived alliance. The match also contributed to continuing the feud between Hogan and DiBiase, which would eventually lead to a more personal and dramatic confrontation at subsequent WWF events.
Overall, this tag team match at MSG was a typical example of WWF’s ability to deliver high-energy, crowd-pleasing moments, especially with such larger-than-life personalities involved.
