Living by yourself affords you all the time in the world. Without having to compromise, you can do what you want, when you want.

Solitary life can be scary, however, especially when you are sick. The social wealth of having a network of friends and loved ones that can support you is not to be underestimated. Your independence and freedom that you took for granted can now be the source of the issue as you must fend for yourself even when you are ill. If you have to get a general anesthetic, you will not be allowed to drive yourself and you will not be insured to take a taxi or uber, so you must rely on friends or family to help you. I found out the hard way with the Covid shock that your emotional wellbeing can also suffer when you spend too long by yourself.

Delaying your enjoyment can be rewarding as you work hard today in the hopes that you will reap the rewards in the future. While striving for a permanent position in academia, I dived into work and recognized that every month was more important than the subsequent month for getting work done due to the fact that academic research is like planting seeds that take time to germinate. When I thought I was going to surface for social "air", Covid hit. I was stuck in one country for almost two years before seeing my closest relatives. Then I pursued real estate intensely, which prolonged my time in "monk mode". After repeating the pattern by renovating several houses over a few years, just when I thought I could start socializing again, life interrupted due to a few negative health shocks. Of course living between multiple countries makes it hard to sustain relations and that had been my history for over a decade.

Regardless, I hope this brief personal update on what it's truly like to live alone - no dating, no friends, no family - for more than half a decade may be an interesting perspective. Perhaps it is alien to you. Or perhaps you have experienced something similar. Let me know in the comments below.
