UNIT A Song For Karen Cooper.

Note: all tracks recorded under the names Academy 23 or UNIT are the property of DNA Records and protected by copyright, regardless of who wrote the works concerned. An early account of this anthem first appeared on School Playground, our 31st album, in 2016. However, we were never satisfied with it and thus we decided to record this vastly improved arrangement. Karen deserves a proper tribute, after all. This new rendition appears on our album Science & Sanity. Karen is the elder sister of Eric Cooper, the boss of our group in Amery Hill School. It was Karen who initially took charge of the self defence classes held every Saturday morning near the old abbey on Kings Hill, Beech, Hampshire. Eric was the hardest boy in our school...but even he was no match for Karen!

The first time we ever met you was on a Saturday morning in Beech.
We stood in silent wonder at the martial arts you were going to teach.
You showed us how to block and punch; you showed us how to parry.
If I’d been born a normal boy, you’d be the girl I’d marry!

You’re a rough kicking woman, yeah!

You’re a high flying woman, yeah –
and the world needs more like you.

You worked in Lasham aerodrome as an aircraft engineer
and told me you’d be flying planes before the end of the year.
You were the hardest girl I knew, with nothing that you could not do.
Dressed from top to toe in blue, I nearly fell in love with you!
