We all make mistakes. What’s important is that we own up to them when we do.

Bill C-293 is not dead, and it won’t die (until we kill it!) because it is a private member’s bill. A private member’s bill can continue to exist, even beyond a prorogued Parliament. Why, you ask? That’s a great question—and one without a logical answer.

Typically, a private member’s bill is reserved for items that rarely become law, and this is for several reasons: limited debate time in the House (usually only one hour per bill), the lack of resources available to MPs for developing and promoting their bills, and the fact that government bills take priority.

But that’s not the case with Bill C-293, and it raises many questions for an inquiring mind. Was this put forward as a private member’s bill as a safeguard, knowing the Liberals’ time was up? A suspicious piece of the puzzle is that Mark Carney was set to take over Erskine-Smith’s riding, but now there’s a sudden venue change to the Edmonton riding.
