The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in your body, running from your lower back, through your hips, and down each leg. It controls movement and feeling in your legs. If irritated or compressed, it can cause pain, tingling, or numbness, commonly known as "sciatica."
There are many reasons you might develop sciatica, and there are a variety of different stretches and movements to help you alleviate the symptoms.
The piriformis is a small muscle deep in your buttocks that helps with hip movement and stability.
It sits close to the sciatic nerve, the largest nerve in your body, which runs from your lower back down your legs.
If the piriformis becomes tight or irritated, it can press on the sciatic nerve, causing pain, tingling, or numbness in the lower back, buttocks, and legs.
This condition, called piriformis syndrome, mimics sciatica. Sitting for long periods, overuse, or injury can irritate the piriformis.
Stretching, strengthening, and proper posture can help relieve and prevent symptoms.

Zacharia is a 200-hour yoga teacher RYT-200, a NASM certified personal trainer, and a corrective exercise specialist. Zach also served 4 years in the Marine Corps Infantry. He first started a mediation practice when he was deployed to Japan and was immersed in their culture. When he was honorably discharged from the Marines in 2016 his mom suggested going to a yoga class with her to help him with several of his injuries. As he got deeper into his practice, he realized he wanted to share the gift and healing potential of yoga with everyone, so he enrolled in the 200hr teacher trainer program at The Lotus Pond.
