"They are losers. But still want to save the world." Signature Ent. in the UK has unveiled the official UK trailer for the Chinese sci-fi action adventure indie time travel comedy thriller called Escape from the 21st Century. This opened in China last year and played at TIFF & Fantastic Fest & Sitges - critics have been calling it "incredibly fun and a blast of raw energy" similar to Scott Pilgrim vs the World. The story follows three friends who discover they have the power to travel back & forth 20 years with a sneeze. But the future is not as good as they hoped, and they need to take on the responsibility of saving the world. It's a po-dunk indie made on a small budget, with ambitious ideas and funky vibes. Starring Ruoyun Zhang, Elane Zhong, Yang Song, Xiaoling Wu, Yanmanzi Zhu. From a review: "The film is simply too entertaining to be denied, with great humor and spectacle, so you go along for the ride and find yourself having a much better time than if you dared quibble every time the plot sort of stumbled over itself." This is worth a watch.

"It makes my heart happy to see our young people witness this long tradition." Vertical has revealed an official trailer for an indie film called Jazzy, the third feature film from acclaimed indie filmmaker Morrisa Maltz following The Unknown Country with Lily Gladstone previously. This premiered at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival last year, and it also played at Nashville, Montana, Santa Fe, San Diego, & Denver Film Fests. Maltz's film Jazzy navigates the space between childhood and young adulthood. When her best friend moves away, Jazzy experiences both a sense of loss and her first inkling of independence. This coming-of-age tale is about Jasmine Bearkiller Shangreaux, a young Oglala Lakota girl growing up in Spearfish, South Dakota, from the ages of six to twelve. Reviews state that, "while the energy of this world is intoxicating, much of it bolstered by a zippy soundtrack that runs the gamut, we see small pains taking shape, too." Starring the real Jasmine Bearkiller Shangreaux, with Syriah Foohead Means, Richard Ray Whitman, Raymond Lee, and Oscar-nominee Lily Gladstone. This looks like a very powerful & authentic coming-of-age story.

The film explores the lives & ever-changing relationships of their peer group as they leave the dreamlike world of childhood behind. Jazzy is directed by American filmmaker Morrisa Maltz, of the films Ingrid and The Unknown Country previously, plus a few shorts. The screenplay is by Morrisa Maltz, Lainey Bearkiller Shangreaux, Vanara Taing, Andrew Hajek. Produced by Miranda Bailey, Natalie Whalen, Lainey Bearkiller Shangreaux, John Way, Elliott Whitton, Tommy Heitkamp, & Vanara Taing. This premiered at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival last year. There's nothing better than to sit down for a film, vaguely expecting it to be interesting, only to be blown away by it. Such was my experience with Yang Li's Escape from the 21st Century [Cong 21 Shi Ji An Quan Che Li]. I hadn't studied the film in detail before deciding to watch it, I was hoping to get an above-average streamer flick, but nothing more. It turns out this is a descendant of the boundless maximalist films that surfaced around 15 years ago when Chinese cinema was trying to figure out its post-arthouse DNA. Not exactly what I expected to find.

I should've known better. Yang Li is one of the directors behind Lee's Adventure, a unique genre and style blender that baffled audiences a decade ago. Though people love to whine about cinema's lack of originality, films brimming with creativity and an eagerness to do things differently often get dismissed quickly. The sad thing is that not much has changed in the 13 years since Lee's Adventure's release. Escape from the 21st Century is still considered too fast-paced, unfocused, and frivolous to be considered a powerhouse film. That is, by the consensus. I adored it.
Mind you, it requires some energy to get through the film. There's a myriad of genres that Li alternates between, the visual density is high and the plot bounces around in various directions. Like Lee's Adventure, Escape from the 21st Century isn't very pure or singular, it's a grotesque mix of fresh ideas, homages, and future-forward experiments. Not everything works, that would've been mental, but I have to appreciate the vigor and relentlessness that drives the film from start to finish. And to be honest, the good greatly overshadows the mediocre here, which is a small miracle.
Planet K is comparable to Earth, but days are only 12 hours long and the place has its unique history. In the year 1999, three boys set out to defend the honor of a girl. They are bested and they're thrown into the sea, and their bodies are subjected to a strange chemical that was dumped there. It gives them the ability to travel twenty years back and forth from the future whenever they sneeze. What is an exciting adventure at first quickly becomes a sobering experience, as they discover that the future isn't as promising and pleasant as they hoped it would be.
screencap of Escape from the 21st Century [Cong 21 Shi Ji An Quan Che Li]
Visually a lot is going on. The scenes set in 1999 use a more squarish aspect ratio, whereas the ones set in 2019 are ultrawide (if you hate the letterbox effect, better brace yourself). The transitions are filmed in a more traditional 16:9, but they're rare. Li also loves to play around with the editing, applies animation overlay effects, has some fun with color and lighting, and speeds up or slows down the tempo to create impact. It's a maximalist playground and Li makes excellent use of whatever trick he has in his toolbox to make it as intense as possible, but it's no doubt divisive.
The score isn't half as interesting, but that's not a big surprise. It's one of the weak spots of Chinese cinema, not even a film like this will challenge that status quo. That is to say, the score isn't terrible, it's a functional selection of tracks that help to set the mood and add the proper accents in the right places. But unlike the visuals, it doesn't challenge or innovate. The score doesn't demand attention nor has a notable impact on the film, it's just supporting background noise that checks off the bare minimum requirements. It's a little disappointing, but par for the course.
As for the performances, they are fine, though they are secondary to the presentation. It's not that the actors do a bad job, they handle the little bit of drama well and they're capable enough to wrestle themselves through the action and comedy bits, but their characters are quite generic and none of the actors are able to inject enough charm and identity to make them memorable. To be fair, they weren't helped by Li, who was too busy adding polish to other parts of the film. Not that it matters too much, this isn't a film you're watching for strong characterizations or layered drama.
screencap of Escape from the 21st Century [Cong 21 Shi Ji An Quan Che Li]
Escape from the 21st Century is a fast-paced film with an original setup, and Li loves spending time on the presentation, so you're best to pay attention during the first 15 minutes to get the general gist of things. The film remains relatively unpredictable throughout, though the second half is a little easier to keep track of. If you're only watching this for the plot then you're not going to have the best time I fear, as it's all rather haphazard and scrapped together, but that's missing the point of what Li is doing here. This is more about paying homage, remixing, and pushing the boundaries of what's already out there.
On the one hand, Escape from the 21st Century is a rather accessible film, as it offers a fun genre mashup with elements that should speak to a variety of crowds. But the maximalist styling and the breakneck pace aren't going to be for everyone. They're right up my alley though, and I wish more directors would have the creative freedom to do what Li does. The concept is cool and the pacing is mad, but it's the bonkers cinematography, the constant onslaught of new ideas, and the smart details sprinkled throughout that make this my kind of film. I hope Li's next one won't take as long to materialize.
THE STORY – Once upon the year 1999, on a planet very much like our own — only 3,000 light years away — three teenagers find themselves plunging into chemical waste that imbues them with a unique ability: when they sneeze their consciousness travels 20 years into the future. With their sinuses now propelling them to and fro in time, they are burdened with two precepts: the future sucks, and they have power to change it.
THE CAST – Ruoyun Zhang, Chuxi Zhong, Yang Song, Xiaoliang Wu & Chenhao Li
THE TEAM – Yang Li (Director/Writer)
THE RUNNING TIME – 98 Minutes
A great concept is never enough to sustain a full-length feature film on its own, but it can hook an audience enough to suck them into getting what you think they need, in addition to what they want. Witness Yang Li’s “Escape From the 21st Century,” which has a killer concept – a group of teenagers develop the ability to sneeze themselves back and forth in time by 20 years – that is only a small part of the whole of its vision. Taking a sci-fi-flavored martial arts comedy and wrapping it around a coming-of-age story, Li’s film is so much more than the sum of its parts. It’s a blast of midnight movie madness with surprising emotional resonance.
Planet K is just like Earth, except that there are only 12 hours in a day, meaning there’s not much time for best friends Paopao (Qixuan Kang), Wang (Yichen Chen), and Chengyon (Zhouzhao Li) to spend together outside of school. One day in 1999, the boys ended up swimming in a chemical spill that gave them the ability to sneeze themselves backward for 20 years and come back when they sneeze again. In the future, Paopao (Leon Lee) is no longer the fat one, Chengyong (Yang Song) is a badass enforcer for a large company, and Wang (Ruoyun Zhang) is a photographer working with investigative journalist Liu Lianzhi (Elane Zhong). Together, they try to meet up in the future and save each other from the terrible fate of not becoming what they expected to be when they were younger, only to learn that their adult lives are more complicated than they seem. Trapped as teenagers in their adult bodies, they must save each other as their poor decisions catch up with them, and the fate of the world hangs in the balance.
There’s plenty of fun to be had with the concept of time traveling by sneezing, and director Li comes up with clever visuals. The fight scenes have a comic book sensibility to them, which adds to the film’s zany energy, and Li exerts strong control over the film’s tone, ensuring it never becomes too much. It’s a lot – with almost always something visually interesting happening – but it never feels overwhelming. Li ensures the film always remains focused on its emotional core: The relationship between the three protagonists.
Both sets of actors have great chemistry and match the performance style of their counterparts with ease. As the film continues and the plot gets wackier, the actors give increasingly physical performances, and watching them transform into more powerful, competent fighters is both fun and dramatically satisfying. Very little here is done with a straight face, but the audience is always laughing along with the characters, never at them. As the boys grow and learn more about the adult world, they also learn what’s most important to them, resulting in a genuinely sweet, emotionally resonant narrative. The fact that this occurs in the middle of so much visual exuberance and silliness is an impressive testament to Li’s strength as a director.
Despite the care taken with the story on a thematic level, the plot itself is so dense with incidents that it can become difficult to track. Bouncing back and forth between timelines and actors gives the audience a lot to keep track of, and even though it’s done well, the film can feel like a whirlwind, sucking you up and spinning you around for long stretches before giving you a lull in which to catch your breath. “Escape From the 21st Century” is a lot of fun, but it requires a great deal of investment to get the most out of it. If you can do that, you’ll be treated to one of the most maximalist midnight movie experiences you could ask for.
Three 18 years-old boys fall into a potion that enables them to travel between the present and 20 years in the future just by sneezing. Disappointed by the state of tomorrow’s world, they decide to save it from the clutches of other time travellers, who are malevolent.
This is undoubtedly the craziest film of the decade. A monumental fresco, put together from bits and pieces of every conceivable genre, like a Frankenstein monster, patchworked with pieces of different films. And the superb soundtrack is likely to frazzle your nerves. A potential cult movie, the likes of which we’ve not seen for some time.

Escape (Korean: 탈주) is a 2024 South Korean action thriller film directed by Lee Jong-pil and starring Lee Je-hoon, Koo Kyo-hwan and Hong Xa-bin. The film depicts the life-threatening defection and chase of Lim Gyu-nam, a North Korean soldier who dreams of a life with a tomorrow on the other side of the barbed-wire fence, and Hyeon-sang, a North Korean State Security officer who must stop him. It was released on July 3, 2024.[3]
Plot
Near the Korean Demilitarized Zone, Sergeant Lim Gyu-nam of the Korean People's Army, who is about to be discharged after 10 years of service, prepares to defect from North Korea to South Korea, due to disillusionment with the regime. However, lower-ranking soldier Kim Dong-hyuk, who discovers Gyu-nam's plan, attempts to escape first, and Gyu-nam, who tries to stop him, is suddenly arrested as a deserter.
Major Li Hyeon-sang of the Ministry of State Security who came to the unit to investigate a deserter, turns Gyu-nam, whom he had known since childhood, into a hero for his efforts to apprehend a deserter, and gives him a position as a direct assistant to the division commander, assisting him with his life. However, when Gyu-nam makes a full-scale escape along with Dong-hyuk, Hyeon-sang begins a pursuit with no way to back down. As Gyu-nam and Dong-hyuk make their escape, Dong-hyuk is killed by Major Li Hyeon. Dong-Hyuk hands hands his sister's necklace to Gyu-nam and succumbs to his injuries. Major Li Hyeon is stopped as Gyu-nam crosses a mine field. As dawn breaks, Gyu-nam sees a squad of South Korean patrol troops. Realising that he is near to South Korea, he approaches them. However, he is stopped by Major Li, who holds Gyu-nam at gunpoint and says that life in South Korea is a failure. Gyu-nam pushes him and beats him up, before running towards a telephone and calling the South Korean soldiers of JSA, telling them about his wish to defect.
Gyu-nam then rushes inside a tunnel that heads towards the DMZ and to South Korea. As he runs, he is shot by Major Li multiple times. Determined to escape, Gyu-nam crawls towards a white line that symbolises the North and South Korean border. As Major Li is about to kill Gyu-nam, South Korean troops arrive, forcing Major Li to leave. Gyu-nam notices that his hands are on the White Line- he is now officially in South Korea. Gyu-nam is then asked by a South Korean soldier if he had radioed for defection. With Gyu-nam responding affirmatively, the South Koreans rescue him.
One year later, Gyu-nam is sitting inside his apartment, writing a business proposal letter, planning to travel abroad. A few days later, he also meets he meets his late junior Dong-hyuk's mother and sister, passing them the family necklace and sharing some moments with Dong-hyuk while they were serving in the North. The film ends with Gyu-nam, now a free man, listening to a podcast. He receives mail informing him of the approval of his business proposal. Seeing this, he smiles and walks while watching the skyline.
