As a detective, he helped put Robert Roberson on death row. As a minister, he says he got it all wrong.

TAKE A RIDE . . . with Fearless Floyd and Robert Roberson, former Palestine P.D. Lead Detective, Brian Wharton, now the pastor of First United Methodist Church in Onalaska, Texas - Wharton rose, his Bible in hand, ready to offer his testimony.

“I believe with every fiber of my being that we messed up, and Robert is, in fact, an innocent man,” he said. “But you don’t have to know that. What you do have to know is as disciples of Jesus the Christ, is that We. Do. No. Violence.”

He paused.

“We support no violence. We participate in no violence. And there is no way around it. The system — it is violence. Perpetrated by the state. And it diminishes us all. When we say it’s OK—” He shrugged, held out his arm. “How are we any different from the world?”

The congregation listened, silent on the benches.

“So I don’t ask you or insist that you understand everything there is to understand about Robert and whether or not he’s guilty or innocent but I would say as a follower of Jesus the Christ, you need to say to the State of Texas and anybody that will give you their ear, the death penalty is not the way of Christ,” he said. “Period.”
