The Pledge of Allegiance was written in August 1892 by Francis Bellamy. The original salute to the pledge of allegiance was called the Bellamy Salute until it was changed by FDR after WWII (for obvious reasons) to placing your Right Hand over your Heart while reciting the pledge.
