Reading of the 1535 Coverdale Bible - Day 22 of 365 (Exodus 12-13) Season 3 - "A Miracle in the Night: Deliverance from Egypt's Grasp"

In tonight's reading, the children of Israel embark on their most pivotal journey yet as they near their freedom from Egypt.

Chapter 12: Preparing for Passover

The Lord instructs Moses and Aaron to mark the beginning of a new era in Israel's history. They are to select a lamb, or an unblemished male kid goat, from every household on the tenth day of the month. The lamb is to be kept until the fourteenth day when it will be killed at twilight, and its blood applied to the doorposts and lintel of the household. This act marks the beginning of a new era, Passover, where the Lord will 'pass over' their homes, sparing them from the tenth plague that will afflict the Egyptian people.

As they prepare for this grand event, the Israelites are instructed to consume unleavened bread for seven days, to commemorate their hasty departure from Egypt. The bread, also known as matzah, serves as a reminder of their reliance on God's deliverance.

On the eve of the fourteenth day, the Israelites are prepared for their miraculous deliverance, as they await the fulfillment of the Passover promise.

Chapter 13: Remembering the Day of Deliverance

The Lord commands Moses to consecrate all firstborn offspring in Israel to Him, in recognition of their unique privilege. The Israelites are then reminded of their miraculous exodus from Egypt, where the Lord brought them out "with a mighty hand" and great power.

In light of this event, the Israelites must abstain from consuming food containing yeast for the next seven days, as they celebrate their newfound freedom. This tradition, known as the Festival of Unleavened Bread, continues to be a significant part of Israel's identity.

As they reflect on their glorious liberation, the children of Israel are reminded of their responsibility to honor God's sovereignty over all creation.
