With a little over a week to go until School Spirits returns for its second season, Paramount+ has released a trailer for the supernatural drama series which sees Maddie (Peyton List) work with her friends in both the spirit and living worlds to help reclaim her body after discovering another ghost from the afterlife, Janet, has stolen it; watch it below…
Death is just the beginning in the new season of the Paramount+ original series, School Spirits. Maddie is still trapped in the afterlife, and time is running out. Now, she must work together with her friends in the spirit and living worlds to find a way back before it’s too late.
School Spirits season 2 premieres on Paramount+ on January 30th.
Paramount+ is inviting audiences to feel the spirit with the unveiling of the Season 2 trailer for its hit series, School Spirits. Just ahead of the sophomore installment’s three-episode premiere on Thursday, January 30, the teaser foreshadows what fans can expect from the next chapter of Maddie Nears’ (Peyton List) afterlife following the jaw-dropping Season 1 finale. It’s been nearly two years since the first season bowed out, with fans incredibly eager to rejoin familiar faces like List, Milo Manheim (Thanksgiving), Sarah Yarkin (Texas Chainsaw Massacre) and more, as the living and the dead get to the bottom of mysteries and live out their lives - or their life beyond death.
If you thought there couldn’t be any more drama than what already panned out in the first season of School Spirits, you’d be dead wrong, as the trailer reveals plenty of more problems for Maddie and the rest of the gang at Split River High. The final episodes of the first season revealed the big question that the primary character had been seeking answers to - how did she end up on the other side, and why couldn’t she remember her death? We come to find out that another spirit, Janet (Jess Gabor), actually possessed her body and is struggling to take full control. Now on the hunt for Maddie’s body, the ghost crew are willing to go into their own darkest moments if that means it will help their friend get her happily ever after ending. Filled with twists, turns, and steamy romances, the teaser for School Spirits promises another stacked season of YA-centered intrigue.
Who Will Be in Season 2 of ‘School Spirits’?
Returning to the fold alongside List, Yarkin, and Maheim, the familiar ghoulish faces of Kristian Ventura (Me Little Me), Spencer MacPherson (Degrassi: Next Class), Nick Pugliese (13 Reasons Why), Kiara Pichardo (The Society), Rainbow Wedell (The Bureau of Magical Things) and Josh Zuckerman (Sex Drive). In addition to Gabor, the lineup of new cast members is set to include Zack Calderon (The Wilds), Ci Hang Ma (Presto! School of Magic), and Miles Elliot (The Amazing Spider-Man), with Maria Dizzia (Orange Is the New Black), Patrick Gilmore (Travelers) and Ian Tracey (Virgin River) returning to their recurring roles as Sandra Nears, Mr. Anderson, and Sheriff Baxter, respectively.

Peyton List
Maddie Nears might just be back from the dead.
In the first trailer for season 2 of School Spirits, released by Paramount+ on Tuesday, Jan. 21, Maddie (Peyton List) contends with the fact that Janet (Jess Gabor) took over her body.
“Maybe Janet’s just the beginning,” List's character Maddie says. “I thought my life was over, stuck between the real world and the afterlife. But the real question is, am I even dead?”
How Peyton List Is ‘Stepping Into Herself’ as She Says Goodbye to Cobra Kai — and Kicks School Spirits into High Gear
Season 1 of the supernatural series ended with high school student Maddie finding out how she died and learning that fellow ghost Janet possessed her body.
“Maddie, or at least her spirits, it’s trapped,” Maddie’s BFF Simon (Kristian Ventura) explains in the trailer. “But her body, we have to help her get it back.”
Milo Manheim as Wally Clark, Peyton List as Maddie Nears and Nick Pugliese as Charley in School Spirits, episode 1, season 2, streaming on Paramount+, 2025.

Claire (Rainbow Wedell) deems that “legit freaky.”
The supernatural students have their suspicions about the intentions of Mr. Martin (Josh Zuckerman).
“Mr. Martin’s been keeping tabs on us,” Wally (Milo Manheim) asserts.
Sarah Yarkin as Rhonda and Nick Pugliese as Charley in School Spirits, episode 1, season 2, streaming on Paramount+, 2025.

Rhonda (Sarah Yarkin) agrees. “He’s been collecting the stuff we all had with us when we died,” she says.
As a result, Wally, who can be seen making out with Maddie in the trailer, decides, “I don’t know what the truth is any more.”

List, 26, previously told PEOPLE that season 2 of School Spirits will pick up right where the first installment left off.
“Maddie finally finds out what happened to her, and that Janet, a ghost from group from the '50s, she supposedly moved on,” she said. “And then you realize that while Maddie was in this emotionally low place, Janet ended up inhabiting her body and going out into the world. And that's exactly where season two picks up is explaining exactly what happened and how that was even possible. And then it follows a lot of Janet and her journey.”
Jess Gabor as Janet Hamilton and Josh Zuckerman as Mr. Martin in School Spirits, episode 2, season 2, streaming on Paramount+, 2025.

The Cobra Kai star teased that upcoming season takes on “a much darker tone” than the first. "It's much more intense than I was expecting it to be,” List said.
Although Maddie struggles to understand Janet’s motives in the show, List enjoys working with Gabor, 28.

“She was so fun to work with,” List said of Gabor. “We would work together on the weekends and whenever we had time, so we were spending a lot of time with each other. She's so great.”
The former Disney Channel star also serves as an executive producer on School Spirits. “If I am going to lead a show, there has to be a certain level of safety and comfort,” List said. “I don't feel comfortable unless I'm able to collaborate. If I do have the label of producer, then it's much more collaborative, and that is really all I wanted.”

The latest trailer has been revealed for School Spirits season 2. The Paramount+ original series began in 2023, introducing audiences to a fantasy drama world wherein a teen is caught in the afterlife trying to investigate her own mysterious disappearance. The show was created by Megan Trinrud and Nate Trinrud, who also wrote the graphic novel on which the series is based. School Spirits features a leading cast including Peyton List, Kristian Ventura, Milo Manheim, Kiara Pichardo, Spencer Macpherson, Rainbow Wedell, and Sarah Yarkin.
Now, Paramount+ has revealed the trailer for School Spirits season 2. The trailer opens with narration from Maddie, who mentions "I thought my life was over, stuck between the real world and the afterlife." After questioning whether she is really dead, she realizes that the ghost of Janet Hamilton is controlling her body. The main School Spirits team then tries to solve a series of mysteries in order to get Maddie's body back. The trailer ends with the spooky line "Maybe Janet's just the beginning."
What This Means For School Spirits Season 2
The Mystery Element Will Be Key To Season 2
This School Spirits trailer indicates that Janet Hamilton is still the main antagonist of season 2. In the first installment, it was explained that Janet was a student who died in a fire prior to the events of the show. In the dramatic School Spirits season 1 finale, Janet possesses Maddie's body, pushing out Maddie's own spirit. The School Spirits season 2 trailer proves that Maddie's spirit is not back in her own body yet, and the attempt to reverse Janet's possession may be a season-long plight.

School Spirits Season 1 Ending Explains 5 Major Mysteries
School Spirits answered its most important questions in its season finale, leaving only a few mysteries unsolved for a potential second season.
The trailer also implies that School Spirits will lean heavily into its mystery. While there has always been a mystery element to the series, Simon, Claire, and the rest of the team are now directly in search of "answers" that they will put together from a series of clues. The trailer itself even makes reference to some classic mystery series, including Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys, paying homage to the teen mystery tradition that has brought the show here.
Our Take On The School Spirits Season 2 Trailer
List Can Deliver An Interesting Performance
Peyton List looking distressed in School Spirits season 2
School Spirits season 2 could be an interesting acting challenge for List, who is tasked to act possessed by something out of her control. The former Disney Channel star is increasingly popular through her work playing Tory on Cobra Kai, and School Spirits will only increase her clout. Hopefully, List's performance and the series mysteries will have good payoffs as School Spirits releases on January 30.

Reception
The review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reported an 83% approval rating with an average rating of 7.3/10, based on 18 critic reviews. The website's critics consensus reads, "School Spirits leaves some of its promising potential untapped, but Peyton List's splendid starring performance makes this paranormal mystery a solid watch for anyone who remembers the phantom pain of growing up."[6]
Daniel D'Addario of Variety wrote, "Without losing sight of the sorrow of Maddie's story, School Spirits manages to be surprisingly sparky and fun—proof positive that there are new stories to tell about the institution no one would ever want to be stuck in for their entire afterlife."[7] Daniel Fienberg of The Hollywood Reporter said, "Sometimes the familiar trappings of the high-school genre can open the door for a show to do wilder and more inventive things than more allegedly mature shows. School Spirits, unfortunately, takes no such liberties."[8]

Peyton Roi List[1] (born April 6, 1998) is an American actress. List began her career as a child model for tween magazines and companies before transitioning to acting with a minor role in the romantic comedy film 27 Dresses (2008) at the age of ten. As a child actress, she appeared in films Remember Me (2010) and Bereavement (2010), before her breakthrough role as Holly Hills in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid film series (2011–2012). List gained further attention in the early 2010s for portraying Emma Ross on the Disney Channel series Jessie (2011–2015).
List transitioned to mainstream roles with the YouTube Premium thriller film The Thinning (2016). Her film credits includes Valley Girl, (2020) Hubie Halloween (2020), Paper Spiders (2021), and The Inheritance (2024). She plays Olivia Richmond on the first season of the Hulu web series Light as a Feather (2018), Tory Nichols in the Netflix series Cobra Kai (2019–present), and Maddie Nears in the Paramount+ series School Spirits (2023–present).
Early life
List was born April 6, 1998.[2] She has two brothers, her twin Spencer,[3] and a younger brother,[4] Phoenix, both of whom are also actors.[3]
As a youth, List attended school in New York City at The Carroll School (P.S. 58) for elementary school, and the New Voices School for Academic and Creative Arts (M.S. 443) for middle school.[5]
During her early childhood, List also trained as a dancer, studying ballet, jazz, tap, and hip-hop until she was in sixth grade.[6]
She attended Oak Park High School in Oak Park, California, graduating in 2016.[7]
Career
2002–2008: Early work and debut
List at the 27 Dresses premiere in 2008 (age 9)
List first began her career as a child model, and in 2009 appeared on the cover of the American Girl's 2009 Back to School issue. In 2011, she modeled for Justice magazine. List had also appeared in over 400 advertisements in various formats for various companies.[8][9] She began acting on television and in film appearances. List made an uncredited appearance on the soap opera As the World Turns in 2002.[10] In 2004, she appeared on the television show All My Children as Bess, and in the same year made a cameo appearance in the feature film Spider-Man 2, which went uncredited.[11] In 2008, List appeared in the feature film 27 Dresses, starring as the young version of the character Jane Nichols. The film was a commercial success,[12] and served as her acting debut.
2010–2015: Breakthrough with Disney and films
List began to appear in more feature films, and in 2010 was cast alongside Robert Pattinson in the film Remember Me as Samantha, a girl who bullies Pattinson's character's younger sister. The film was a box-office success.[13] In the same year, List had begun her work with Disney, and appeared as the younger version of Becky in the fantasy film The Sorcerer's Apprentice, which turned to be a financial failure.[14] She also was cast in the Lifetime television film Secrets in the Walls,[15] and played Wendy Miller in the crime horror film Bereavement, which was a box-office success.[16] In 2011, List starred as Holly Hills, the crush of Greg Heffley, in the comedy film Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules, the second installment of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid film series. The film performed well commercially,[17] and List later reprised her role for its sequel, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days. The film was a success alike to its prequels, and the acting ensemble, including List, had won a Young Artist Award.[18]

List in 2013
List next had a role in the romantic comedy film Something Borrowed in 2011,[19] which was received negatively. That same year, List began her work on Disney Channel, and was cast as Emma Ross, the eldest of four affluent children, on the Disney Channel series Jessie alongside Debby Ryan and her Diary of a Wimpy Kid co-star Karan Brar. The show attained millions of viewers on average per episode,[20] and soon became List's biggest role at the time. The show ran for four seasons and ended in February 2015.[21] At the same time, it was announced that List, along with Brar and Skai Jackson, would reprise their roles in the spinoff series Bunk'd.[22][23] The show began airing in 2015.[24] Along with reprising the role on Bunk'd, List also had appeared as Emma Ross on other Disney Channel shows, such as Austin & Ally and I Didn't Do It. Along with her television work, List continued her work in films. In 2012, List appeared in the drama film The Trouble with Cali, which was received negatively.[25] From 2013 to 2014, she co-hosted the Disney Channel program Pass the Plate, a segment focusing on healthy eating,[26] with Karan Brar. In 2014, List voiced Princess Rose in the English dub of the German animated film The Seventh Dwarf. Though the film was a moderate financial success,[27] it was received unfavorably by critics.[28] In 2015, List performed with Ingrid Michaelson at one of Michaelson's concerts.[29]
2016–present: Mainstream transition
In 2016, List co-starred along with Jacob Bertrand in the Disney Channel Original Movie The Swap, appearing as Ellie O'Brien.[30] The premiere averaged over two million viewers,[31] and had a mixed reception. In the same year, List appeared as Laina Michaels in the YouTube Premium film The Thinning, starring alongside Logan Paul and Lia Marie Johnson.[32] In 2017, List appeared in the teen comedy film The Outcasts as Mackenzie Smith.[33] Production had initially began in 2014 under its original title The Outskirts,[34] and was not released until three years later. It was originally released direct-to-video, but was eventually picked up for a theatrical release.[35] In 2018, it was announced that List would leave Bunk'd, and depart from her work on Disney Channel entirely.[36][37] When she still worked with the network, List was an active member of the Disney Channel Circle of Stars.[38]
List reprised her role as Laina Michaels in The Thinning: New World Order, the sequel to The Thinning, which was released in 2018.[39] That same year, she starred alongside Asa Butterfield in the romantic drama film Then Came You as Ashley.[40] List was soon cast in the main role of Olivia Richmond in the first season of the supernatural web series Light as a Feather, which was released through Hulu in October 2018.[41] Also in 2018, List made her singing debut with the single "Liar Liar".[42] In 2019, List voiced Barbara Gordon / Batgirl in the direct-to-video superhero film Batman: Hush.[43] That same year, List was cast in the recurring role of Tory Nichols in the YouTube Premium action series Cobra Kai, which she began portraying in its second season.[44]
In 2020, List appeared in the musical film Valley Girl, a remake of the 1983 film,[45] had a role in the Netflix comedy-horror film Hubie Halloween,[46] and co-starred in the drama film Paper Spiders opposite Stefania LaVie Owen and Lili Taylor.[47] In June 2022, List was cast in the lead role in the Paramount+ television series School Spirits and it premiered in March 2023.[48][49]
Namefellow
List shares the same name with another fellow actress, Peyton List (born 1986).[50][51] The younger List was interviewed by Access Hollywood, saying she uses Peyton R. List to avoid confusion.[50] Union SAG-AFTRA's policy avoids living actors with the same name; this instance went unnoticed.[50]
Once, the two young actresses appeared in the same scene when they both appeared on As the World Turns.[50][11] Years later, this Peyton List cited confusion when both were staying at the same hotel. They received each other's daily call sheets and voicemails messages.[50]
Entertainment industry news website IndieWire noted the confusion appeared on Wikipedia, where both actresses' articles began with exactly the same sentence, "Peyton List is an American actress and model."[51]
Both actresses also voiced characters in the animated movie Batman: Hush, the younger as Batgirl and the older as Poison Ivy.

It’s time to get some answers! Paramount+ has finally released the full trailer for Season 2 of School Spirits, which drops Jan. 30 with its first three episodes. Additional episodes will continue to roll out weekly on Thursdays.
Based on a graphic novel of the same name, School Spirits follows a teenage ghost named Maddie Nears as she attempts to solve her own recent murder. She’s aided by new friends in the afterlife, specifically a support group of other teenagers who have been murdered on school grounds, as well as her still-living friend Simon, with whom Maddie shares a vague spiritual connection.
The eight-episode first season introduced a number of potential killers, only to end with a polarizing, out-of-left-field twist: Maddie never actually died! Her spirit was merely separated from her body after it was stolen by a vengeful ghost who died in a fire set by the support group’s supposed mentor. (Yup.) The finale ended with “Maddie” boarding a bus out of town.
Watch the Season 2 trailer below:
“Picking up from the shocking Season 1 finale, the premiere episode … follows Maddie Nears as she works to bring a doubting Simon, her only connection to the living world, back on board to help her track down and collect her missing body,” reads the official logline.
Read on for a breakdown of everything we know about School Spirits‘ sophomore year, including the fresh faces we’ll encounter at Split River High, then drop a comment with your thoughts on what’s to come.
