Proper Way To Open A Can Is Holding The Opener Horizontally Rather Than Vertically

Can openers are pretty simple. We all know how to use them, right? Wrong! According to this video the proper way to use a can opener is one of the world's best kept secrets. The video claims that, while most people hold the can opener vertically, they're actually supposed to clamp onto the top of the can horizontally.

Apparently it turns out you might have been using a can opener wrong your whole life but the 'right' way may be unsafe It turns out there's a 'right' way to use a can opener and you probably haven't been doing it.According to this video, you should hold the can opener horizontally instead of vertically. But some are saying this method is unsafe because it can sharpen the top of the can and make it easier to cut your hand.

There are some things that will never be replaced by an app, and a sturdy, hand-cranked can opener is one of them. Unfortunately, we’re all too busy learning to code or whatever to practice our domestic skills, and no one knows how to use them. Upon watching this 30-second video you will have your entire world blown open. No wonder the can opener always pops off halfway through and there’s shards of metal sticking out at random! No wonder we have to pry the final threads of the lid off with a butter knife! It all makes sense!

You’re not cutting down into the lid, you’re sort of slicing the can’s head off, working horizontally instead of vertically. The video shows a guy opening a can the "regular" way first, and then changing the position of the can opener to hold it the "proper way. It makes so much more sense to hold it flat than to vertically try to attach it. The way proposed as 'right' in this video leaves the entire cut top edge exposed and 'sharp' meaning easier to cut your hand on. The first way cuts below the folded top, so the sharp edge is inside the can and harder to hit.

The best method to open a can likely depends on the type of can opener you have. It seems the method purported to be the "proper" one might be best used with a smooth-edge can opener, as shown in the video above. So, we might ask ourselves again what is the true way to use a can opener and not necessarily the smart way? Perhaps the answer to that question will forever remain a mystery - or you can just open a can in whatever way works for you. It’s doesn’t look for any skills and there is nothing philosophical about it. You just need to find the best way that works for you and stuck to it.
