The Potholes of Cottenham
Folk hero of the Fens of Eastern England, Hereward the Wake, was spotted in the village of Cottenham just outside Cambridge recently.
The serenity of the Fen edge village was disturbed one Sunday afternoon when Hereward turned up and began complaining about the potholes in the village and on the 'King's Highway'.
Needless to say old wounds run deep and Hereward was soon pointing the blame at his arch-nemesis William the Conqueror. Calling for the Conqueror to get the potholes filled in 'or I'll be the one doing the filling in!'
It was Hereward who is famous for his heroic stand against the Conqueror in the dark days of the Norman Conquest, the most cataclysmic moment in the history of the English folk.
Here re-enactor Rory G entertains on the village green at Cottenham in celebration of the cultural heritage icon of the Fens.
