A Radiant Witness of Purity and Courage"
Introduction
Welcome to today’s episode, where we honor the life and witness of one of the Church’s most beloved martyrs, St. Agnes, Virgin and Martyr. Her feast on January 21, as celebrated in the Traditional Catholic Calendar, shines as a testament to the purity, courage, and faith of a young girl who chose Christ above all earthly treasures and threats.
Through the lens of the writings of St. Ambrose of Milan and St. Augustine, along with today’s Scripture readings, we will reflect on St. Agnes’s heroic virtues and what her example means for us today. As we journey through this episode, let us keep in mind the powerful words of St. Ambrose:
"She is too young to know of death, yet she is ready to face it. Her slender body contains a faith that conquers the sword."

Segment 1: St. Agnes and the Courage of Purity
St. Agnes was no more than 12 or 13 years old when she faced martyrdom. In a time of brutal Roman persecution, she stood firm in her faith, refusing to marry or compromise her purity, declaring herself a bride of Christ. For this, she was subjected to cruel threats and ultimately executed.
St. Ambrose eloquently captures the paradox of her young age and profound courage:
"Girls of her age cannot even bear the angry looks of their parents, yet she willingly offers herself to the executioner."
This paradox highlights the supernatural grace that empowered St. Agnes to remain steadfast. Her strength was not of this world; it came from her deep love for Christ and her desire to be united with Him eternally.
The Epistle from Ecclesiasticus (Sirach) 51:1-8, 12 reminds us of the deliverance and protection God offers to those who trust in Him:
"Thou hast preserved my body from destruction, from the snare of an unjust tongue, and from the lips of them that forge lies."
Though St. Agnes suffered and died, her soul was preserved by God, and she now reigns as a saint in Heaven. Her story reminds us that God’s ultimate deliverance is not always from physical suffering but from eternal separation from Him.

Segment 2: Holy Virginity and the Bride of Christ
St. Augustine, reflecting on the beauty of consecrated virginity, wrote:
"The virgins who consecrate their hearts and bodies to God reflect the purity of the Church herself, prepared as a bride for Christ."
This insight helps us understand St. Agnes’s choice. For her, earthly marriage paled in comparison to the spiritual union she already shared with Christ. Her commitment to virginity was a sign of her total self-gift to God.
The Gospel from Matthew 25:1-13, the parable of the ten virgins, resonates deeply with St. Agnes’s life:
"They that were ready went in with Him to the marriage, and the door was shut."
St. Agnes was one of the wise virgins, always keeping her lamp of faith filled with the oil of love and sacrifice. She was spiritually prepared to meet her Bridegroom, Christ, and enter the eternal wedding feast.
In a world that often undervalues chastity and mocks purity, St. Agnes stands as a countercultural witness. She reminds us that true freedom and joy are found in living for Christ and striving for holiness, no matter the cost.

Segment 3: Lessons for Today—Spiritual Readiness and Trust in God
The story of St. Agnes challenges us to examine our own spiritual readiness. Are we like the wise virgins, keeping our lamps filled with the oil of prayer, penance, and virtue? Or have we grown complacent, distracted by the world’s allurements?
St. Agnes’s unwavering trust in God calls us to greater faith. The Epistle assures us of God’s faithfulness:
"My soul shall praise the Lord even to death, because Thou deliverest them that wait for Thee."
Even when faced with suffering, rejection, or persecution, we are called to persevere. Like St. Agnes, we must trust that God’s promises are worth any earthly sacrifice.

Segment 4: Embracing the Cross with Joy
St. Agnes did not face martyrdom with fear or hesitation. Tradition tells us that she went to her execution joyfully, as if she were going to a wedding feast. This joy in the face of suffering can only come from a heart completely surrendered to God.
As Christians, we are called to embrace our own crosses with similar trust and joy. St. Agnes reminds us that earthly trials, no matter how painful, are temporary. What awaits us is eternal union with Christ, the source of all joy and peace.
St. John Chrysostom once said:
"When we suffer for Christ, we are crowned with glory. The more the struggle, the greater the reward."
Let us strive to imitate St. Agnes by living lives of purity, courage, and unwavering faith, keeping our eyes fixed on the eternal crown that awaits us.

Conclusion Prayer
Let us close in prayer, asking for the intercession of St. Agnes:
Heavenly Father,
You gave us St. Agnes as a radiant example of purity, courage, and faith. In her youth, she demonstrated wisdom beyond her years, choosing to suffer for Your sake rather than compromise her love for You.
Through her intercession, grant us the grace to remain steadfast in our faith amidst the trials of this life. Help us to value the eternal treasures of Heaven above the fleeting pleasures of this world. Strengthen us to live lives of purity and holiness, always keeping our lamps filled with the oil of love and sacrifice.
St. Agnes, Virgin and Martyr, pray for us, that we may have the courage to follow your example and one day join you in the eternal wedding feast of the Lamb.
We ask this through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
Thank you for joining us today. May St. Agnes inspire you to live with faith, courage, and joy. Until next time, may God bless you and keep you always in His grace.
