On December 10, 2024, at 12:55 a.m., East Los Angeles Station deputies responded to a person with a gun call in the 6500 block of East Olympic Boulevard, unincorporated East Los Angeles. The call indicated a male, later identified as 24-year-old Zachary Lewis, was inside a business with a firearm in his waistband.

Upon their arrival, deputies located Lewis standing outside the business in front of the main entry doors. As deputies detained Lewis at gunpoint, they ordered him numerous times to keep his hands up. Lewis then armed himself by drawing a pistol from his waistband, and a deputy-involved shooting occurred.

Lewis sustained gunshot wounds to his body. Deputies then approached and rendered first aid to Lewis until the arrival of Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel. Lewis was transported to a local hospital, where he was subsequently pronounced dead. No deputies or other persons were injured during the incident. A spring-powered BB gun was recovered at the scene.
