I have been using a range of red light therapy products over the last year or so and with mixed results. In some areas the results have been noticeable and good - mild knee and hand arthritis, the skin on my hands, and gum disease. In other areas, there is no noticeable improvement - hair loss, weight, or general health. I am not going to comment here on how well this particular device works from a health standpoint as this would have to be a subjective judgement made over weeks if not months. I will look at the build quality, construction and operation of the device.

I already own a similar red light device which I have used with some success to treat joint pain. My old device, which uses a smaller number of larger LED beads, has no battery or control panel and instead just plugs directly into a USB socket or power bank with a single backlit button to select the operating mode. So I was pleased to give this more upmarket rivaL a try.

In the rather attractive mid-market product box you receive the red light therapy pad, power cord, battery box/controller, two extension straps, user manual and a Storage Bag. Build quality all seems fine, well made and robust with nothing looking likely to fall off or fail anytime soon.

The device is comprised of a 634.9g, 10.2 x 5.5 x 3.5 cm pad, pre-shaped to fit to a knee or shoulder joint and housing 72 dual mode LED beads covering an area of around 12 x 12 x 4 cm². Rated at a total of 14W, each bead outputs at 660nm (red light), and 850nm (near-infrared) separately or simultaneously. We are not told the output rating for the individual beads. The beads are controlled by the combined battery box and control panel which attaches magnetically to the outside of the pad fitted facing up or facing down. The current operating status of the unit is shown on the control box LCD screen.

As soon as the control box is connected to the knee pad it automatically starts working with the output set to 650 + 850 nm for 10 minutes by default. After use and before removing it from the pad,be sure to switch the device off by long pressing the power button for three seconds.

To change the settings, press the Output level button (top left) to scroll through the three output levels. Press the Mode button (lower right) to scroll through the three operating modes - 660nm, 850nm or both. The Timer button (top right) sets the unit to run between 10 and 30 minutes. When working short press the power button to obtain 10Hz pulsing and repeat to return to always on. On top of the unit is the lock button, press it to prevent accidentally making changes, and again to release.

It takes about three hours to charge the 3000mAh battery from the USB-C port on the side, with one charge giving between 2 and 6 hours of use, depending on the configuration used. A red marker on the screen flashes to indicate charging.

I am very pleased in general with the unit, my own criticisms being that the magnetic mount is not secure enough to allow much movement and the pad, preshaped to fit the knee, elbow, or shoulder, makes it difficult to use on other parts of the body,

This $79.99 unit is a distinct improvement on my cheapo AliExpress rival and I am confident in using it, although it is too soon to say if it yields better results.
